HOORAY FOR ....

It's Oscar Time....

So are you ready for the 84th Academy Awards? Are you super excited like I am to see Billy Crystal hosting this year? Best openings ever except for maybe Hugh Jackman who had a good one a few years ago. I love the tradition of getting together to watch the awards each year. It's similar to a Super Bowl party for us but we don't go all out and get dressed up like some awards parties do. We are simple folk! In case you didn't know this already Academy Award night is pizza night in our house. This is a tradition that comes from my childhood growing up. Our ballots are printed and ready to be filled out.

My Father was the manager of a movie theatre when I was growing up. That was back in the day when movie theatres were pretty special. No big mega theatres back then. He started out at 16 being a usher and moved his way up to manager. It was the Atlantic Theatre back in Chicago. It is not a movie theatre anymore. Well needless to say I spent a great deal of time at the movies. My all time favorite was (1959) Danny Kaye in "The Five Pennies." (it actually received 4 nominations that year) I really had no clue what we were watching in the earlier days but it was a fun pizza night which back then was a special treat!

So we have continued the tradition with our children and we have all been avid movie goes. There was a time when Mark worked from home and we would often go twice a week. I have to say that for the past several years I have not been prepared like in previous years. We just don't make it to the movies as often anymore. Well this year I decided to get back on track and see all the movies that I could. Of course that didn't start until the nominees were announced so I didn't get to see everything. I concentrated on Best Picture nominations.

BEST PICTURE NOMINATIONS:
THE ARTIST*
THE DESCENDANTS*
EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE*
THE HELP*
HUGO*
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS*
MONEYBALL*
THE TREE OF LIFE (came in the mail yesterday!)
WAR HORSE*
(*=I saw this movie)

I also saw "My Week with Marilyn" and "The Iron Lady" plus a few other movies that have nominations. Have to say that the actresses and actors nominated gave excellent performances also. You have no idea how excited I was on Thursday evening when Mark brought in the mail and the The Tree of Life came from Netflix! How perfect was that timing? So it is safe to say that I have seen all the Best Picture nominations.

I was going to give them stars and review them but decided not too. I have to say that all the nominated movies that I saw were very good. They all easily get 4 stars, The Help is a 5 and The Artist is a 5+ in my opinion. I know everyone has their opinions on movies. There are a lot of wonderful stories to be told and these movies all kept my interest throughout the entire movie. How do you choose one when they are each so different yet wonderful. I think it is a year of excellent movie nominations! Hope you all get the chance to see these movies someday.

The Academy Awards are on Sunday February 26th starting at 4pm Pacific time on ABC with the Oscars Red Carpet Live and the 84th Academy Awards starting at 5:30 Pacific time. So the will be 7pm Eastern time and 6pm Central! It is the one award show that is presented live in all time zones.

Have a nice weekend and party on!

p.s. If you want to print out a ballot you can go here. If you want to know what the Academy Award is all about you can check it out here.

The Academy Awards is one show I just don't care to watch, for some reason. It just seems to drag on for an eternity! Of course, most of them do! :)

I don't usually watch until the end and then I like to see best actor and actress and best picture. That's so neat that you have a party and print out ballots! My problem would be that the only one I've seen is "The Help".....So I guess I can't vote! :(

Be glad that your husband likes movies...mine does not!

We're really not into those award shows, but my sister really is!

Since we don't watch movies in theaters (between DH's poor hearing and the price of tickets, we just wait to watch at home), we've only seen The Help, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Most of the rest of those movies are in our queue - for when they're released on DVD. I just don't know about The Artist. I'm not into silent movies, although everyone says that it's very good.

Of the list...I've heard of Moneyball and I do want to see it too. Maybe we'll watch it tonight if Hubby is game. :) (Thanks for that inspiration!)

I rarely see all the movies that have been nominated...some year maybe I will! This year, the only one I've seen is The Help. I really wanted to see War Horse!

I'm drawing a blank. I don't watch any movies until they make it to Netflix instant or to DVD.

Deb, thanks for the movie ratings. I'm not a huge movie-goer, but I like a good suggestion. From your list, I only saw The Help, and I've heard The Artist is really good. Sounds like a good time in your house! Do you dress up for the presentations? :) Party on!

Lucky you growing up in a movieville home. What great memories you must have. Enjoy your evening.

I have not seen one movie on the list. We rarely go although I enjoy going out to movies when we do. Somehow we don't make the time.

I enjoyed your post about your tradition and your dad at a Theater Manager.

Have fun tonight. I'll be watching also - I always do.

I've never been a big award watcher. I want to see "the Iron Lady" & Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
I fell asleep during Midnight In Paris during the flight back from London. Guess I need to see the Artist...it's winning a lot of awards, isn't it?

Katherines Corner said...

I saw Midnight in Paris but I haven't seen any of the others..........sad face. I will miss the first hour of the Oscars tonight because it's on at the same time as The Walking Dead one of my hubbys fav shows.xo

Since I don't keep up with the movies since they are so expensive the most fun part for me will be listening to Billy Crystal...how fun!

I hope you had a good time watching the Oscars.
I was at work and didn't see them.

I do love going to the movies.

I love your idea of watching all the nominated films. Now that we have moved and are no longer close to a theater, we aren't seeing many movies. Netflix may be the perfect idea for us.

Hope all your favorites were big winners! I was so glad that Hugo did so well - I thought the book was brilliant.
