WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

Joyce is back...hooray!
Volume 204

1. What's your best piece of advice for a newly married couple? I'm asking for a friend.

Save for retirement now!

2. Before we're too far into the new year I wanted to post a question Teresa submitted during the December giveaway. Teresa blogs over at Being Refined As Silver, so everyone go say hi. Teresa asks, "What were you doing on December 31st, 1999?"and "Did you or your family make preparations for Y2K?"

We didn't do anything drastic but I do remember being nervous about what could possibly happen.

3. According to Global Language Monitor, the most used word of 2014 isn't a word. It's the heart emoji. Huh? How can something that's not a word be the most used word, but I digress. What do you think was your most used word in 2014?

((HUGS)) I can't think of a word I used often but I know I typed hundreds and hundreds of hugs last year.

4. Speaking of words, it's that time again. Time for Lake Superior University to present a list of words they'd like to see banished (for over-use, mis-use, and general uselessness) in 2015.

You can read more about the decision making process here, but this year's top vote getters are- bae (before anyone else), polar vortex, hack, skill set, swag, foodie, curate/curated, friend-raising, enhanced interrogation, cra-cra (as in crazy), takeaway, and -nation (a suffering sports suffix).

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?

I'm going to go with cra-cra.

5.  January is National Hot Tea month? Are you a fan? Do you like flavored teas? How do you take your tea? Have a favorite cup or teapot? How many cups of tea do you consume in a given day?

I like tea but seldom drink it. I'm not a coffee drinker much either.

6. Whatever happened to_______________?

Respecting your elders.....

7. What is one book on your must-read list this winter?

I don't have just one because I buy a lot of books with the hopes of reading them.  The one I need to really read is one I received for Christmas 2013 by Peter Walsh "It's All Too Much", an easy plan for living a richer life with less stuff! If you missed my word for this year you can find it here.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Good progress is being made on taking our Christmas decorations down. One tree down, one to go. Then comes the not fun process of downsizing the actual decorations I place around the house. It should take me a few more weeks to go through all the bins of the things I didn't put out this year.

Today I am at Adam and Tristen's condo waiting for the movers to come. They were not doing moves during the Holiday's. I'm not sure how my emotions will be while I'm there. On a happier note Adam will be in town on Saturday. He will be working in the office this week so we get to celebrate his 36th Birthday with him. Only wish Tristen was coming out too......

A lot of us are using cra-cra as the answer to #4. It's such an odd word.Good luck dowsizing, it's not easy.

Save for retirement is a good idea! We also just started a college plan for both girls...a little late, but we still have some time.

How is Tristen liking her new job? So true advice about saving for retirement, Debby; I have my own horror story about not doing so when approached about it when we were young and regret it to this day. I got rid of a lot of Christmas stuff before we moved. It was hard because of the memories, but hadn't used some of it in years, but in the long run it is freeing to go with less indeed.

I finished packing away the last of the Christmas decorations, last Friday. However, I have not gone through any of my old decorations to get rid of anything. That's just so hard to do!!!

That's great marriage advice! I remember thinking retirement was 'light years' away, but here it is!!

I'm glad you'll get to celebrate Adam's birthday with him. At least it's something!!! We haven't seen our 'out of towners' since Christmas, and that's been far too long :(

happy helping moving them in!

i don't like the use of the word 'hack' to mean like a tip or trick or short-cut, etc. as in: '5 medical hacks everyone should know'. makes me a little cra-cra. ;)

SAVE FOR RETIREMENT - I second it! And I think the word I typed most was love or hugs too.

Enjoyed your answers. We finally got all of our Christmas decorations put away yesterday. The fun part is I have to crawl back in the crawlspace and place them. Glad that is over with. Thank God I have never seen a mouse or a spider, I would probably kill myself getting out of there.
until next time...nel

To me, the word cra-cra says a LOT about someone. I use the <3 a lot and the ;) winky face. Someone called me out on the winky face recently. I read a lot of books on simplicity and I like to think it's rubbing off on me. Let me know how you like your book.

((HUGS)) is a nice one to use a lot!!

Hope you enjoy your time with Adam.

Nikki said...

Oh yes i use ((hugs)) quite a lot too.
I know what you mean about respecting elders! The way i hear some kids talk to their parents is shocking to me. :O

I remember being a little nervous about Y2K too. I was a senior in high school and babysitting my cousin that night :-)

Best of luck with your Christmas decorations!! I always dread taking them down, but it seems to be a New Years Day tradition anymore. If we didn't have a real tree, I think I'd wait longer though ;-)

How exciting that Adam is coming back and will be there for his birthday! Enjoy your time with him! :-)

Im still un-decorating, and I need to clean out and go thru my decorating stash. Im glad you'll get to celebrate your sons birthday in person!

How fun to get to celebrate your son's birthday with him. cra-cra is a stupid word to me.

I think your advice is probably the best I've seen so far! As a recipient of some of your {{HUGS}}, I thank you!

Coffee is my favorite, but I'll drink tea when I'm sick - hmmm.

You are so right about your answer on #1! So many new couples know nothing about fincnces or how to save.

Hi, Debby!

You have been on my mind. Thanks for dropping by.
Between a slow laptop and now being sick I haven't done what I have wanted to do.
As for the laptop, my son thinks Google Chrome was quickly eating all my memory. He told me to try Firefox for a while.
I do agree, save for retirement now!
Something we neglected to do. ouch
