WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

Volume 250
Happy New Year!

1. Are you ready for new? Is 2016 likely to be very different than 2015? Do you want it to be?

I feel like I am very ready and yes I want it to be different!

2. January 6th is National Technology Day. Currently, what is your single biggest struggle or frustration when it comes to technology?

I'm not feeling any frustrations right now and I hope it stays that way. Might be getting a new phone in February so I'm sure there will be frustration while I adjust to something new!

3. It's that time again...time for Lake Superior University to present a list of words (or phrases) they'd like to see banished (for over-use, mis-use, and general uselessness) in 2016. You can read more about the decision making process here, but this year's top vote getters are-

So (at the start of every single sentence), conversation (as in hotly debated topics where we're invited to 'join the conversation'), problematic, stakeholder, price point, secret sauce, break the Internet, walk it back, presser, manspreading (common in larger cities where some men take up the entire bus or train seat by sitting wide), vape, giving me life (refers to anything that may excite a person or make them laugh), and physicality

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?

I don't really know but I must admit that I often type SO at the beginning of a sentence and I've been going back to change it for months now because it was bothering me.

4. Share one of your current health related goals.

To move each day. I've been eating healthy for awhile now but I'm not moving enough. Funny, Adam and Tristen were bouncing around the house getting in those 10,000 steps each day when they were here.

5. Let's talk fifty shades of gray. As in the color. Gray is currently a popular color in home decor, paint, wardrobes, hair, wedding party attire, and more. Are you a fan? Do you have the color in some variation in your home or wardrobe?  Gray hair, the old gray mare, gray matter, gray area...which gray idiom can you most relate to right now?

I am a fan of gray. Mark and Amber have been wearing gray for years and I have a few gray tops. I don't have it in the house anywhere but not because I don't like it. I'll go with the old gray mare....because she isn't going to be what she use to be for 2016!!!

6. Certain foods are considered 'lucky' if eaten on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. Cooked greens to bring economic fortune, black-eyed peas or lentils also symbolize money, pork which symbolizes progress, fish for good luck, and if you're in Spain 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight. Did you eat any lucky foods on the first day of the year? Is that a tradition in your home? Of the foods listed, which most appeals to you?

No we do not eat any lucky foods.  Pork would be my choice because we like pork.

The tradition in my family has always been to eat herring at midnight, rub silver dollars together for luck and put coins on a window sill outside on New Year's Eve.

I put the coins on the window sill each year and we do pop open a bottle of champagne at midnight. Nothing special on New Year's Day although I did eat some leftover country style pork ribs....LOL!

7. What's the single biggest time waster in your life and what, if anything, will you do about it this year?

Biggest time waster for me is being on my computer or phone. Sure I watch evening TV but that is my time to unwind and relax. I do have a plan which goes with my word for the year which I will write about soon.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

Christmas decorations are still up but I will start gathering things to the dining room table and start packing boxes up on Saturday. This is early for me.

Mark the huge football fan, watches as many games as he possibly can didn't realize that when he booked our trip to Carlsbad on February 7th that it was Super Bowl Sunday!

It will be okay, we can watch it in our hotel room while listening to the waves of the ocean or we will go to a bar and watch it which is something we have never done before. I'm kinda voting for the bar......

I hope they will outlaw the word 'journey'. Every time I hear it I get so annoyed for some reason.

I nearly bought a grey dress for our Christmas party last year, but the dress itself was not that flattering. Loved the colour though.

I love black and white with shades of gray and always have and did not know it is now an IN color... my kitchen counters are gray and have been for 26 years. i like gray in decor but not clothes, or not for me anyway.
oh no on the super bowl vacation... i think each area has different things they do on new years day, ours has always been pork, greens and black eyes, bob's was pork and sauerkraut. sometimes i do the southern thing and sometimes not and i don't believe in luck at all...good or bad... and if i did what i eat would have nothing to do with it. SO, lets talk about starting a sentence with so... I do it all the time, if i checked my blog i wonder how many times it is used there. that is the only word i use in the list and the only one i have heard, the others are all new to me

I think of all the words listed there, the one I might use more than any of the others is the word "so" at the beginning of the sentence. It can be a bit awkward using it, especially in a medical report; lots of doctors tend to do it though.

I think going to a bar to watch the Super Bowl could be fun. I think watching it with a group of people sometimes is a bit more enjoyable than with just one or two people, maybe that's why Super Bowl parties are so popular.

We got snow from your rain :)

I am thinking 2016 is going to be a great year for you Debby! I think you are heading in the right direction with making changes in order to do so :)

I hope 2016 is all you are dreaming it will be. I'm going to try to work on my tree today. I really love having it up, but I suppose it's time. And once it's down I'm always glad to have the job behind me. Happy new year!

Depending on the coins you put out on your window sill, I might stop by next new years. ;-) I wish I moved as much as the grandkids. I wonder how many calories they burn just running around the circle of our house! I hope that 2016 is a great year for you, Debby.

I hear you, I want to be different too! I'm working on me :).

Good for you my dear to eat healthy! I'm working on that too!

quite a few of those over-used words or phrases i've not heard before. shows you how far behind the times i am. :)

Getting fit in 2016 sounds like a worthwhile goal. Let me tell you a funny about the Fitbit bracelets you mentioned. Hubby has one and a couple years ago we went on a horse ride while in Breckenridge, CO. During the ride he hollered from behind that he had just reached his 10,000 steps for the day. It was reading the horses steps. We have had a lot of fun with that one.

I've noticed that I also use the word "so" a lot to begin a sentence. Wishing you lots of good things in 2016.

I think you are going to have a great 2016. I use the word so at the beginning of sentences and I have no idea why. And gray - i think for me it washes me out. You sure do eat healthy - I love all your foods you show. I enjoyed your answers!

Getting a new phone brings out the frustrations in me-usually daughters will help with this.
Enjoy the Super Bowl in Carlsbad while sitting at the bar!

Oh the sound of waves, one of my absolute favorites! I need to get to the beach soon. We were planning on going this past weekend but I was feeling worn out and never mustered up the energy to get dressed ;) I'm with you on getting moving. Seems like most at the Hodgepodge today are. Happy New Year!

I like that tradition of putting coins on the window sill on New Year's Eve!

I've been thinking about you as I go about the business of packing away Christmas decorations. It makes me sad to pack them up, because I love looking at them.

Thank goodness your hubby didn't ask to change your beach trip plans :)

We do something similar to the coins on the window sill...money in the bushes. I have to admit I haven't done it in years...probably because the traditions lose their fun when I'm the only one awake. My hubby rarely makes it until midnight unless we are with friends and we rarely do that any more.

Ha, I like the setting the coins out on the window sill. Fun idea.
My boys love herring!!!

Hope 2016 is great one for you.
And I think your idea for the big game is a SUPER one. :-))
