WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE
1. Of all the tools and gadgets you own which do you most enjoy using?
Not sure what Joyce means here. I will go with a kitchen gadget. I have a new can opener that I love. It is one that does a smooth edge on the can and the lid. I hated tossing those sharp lids away, I wrapped them in paper towel. I never recycled them because I don't want anyone to get hurt on it. So now I can recycle the lid too and not worry anymore!
2. When (if ever) is impatience a virtue?
What came to mind is when someone you love is ill and in the hospital. I think of Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment when she wants her daughter to have her shot!
3. What temperature do you keep your thermostat set to in winter? Do you have another way to heat your house besides a furnace of some type?
I don't remember but I would guess somewhere around 70. No we do not have another way to heat the entire house. I am getting pretty close to turning the furnace on today. I put on thick socks, a sweater and have a afghan on me and I'm still cold!
4. Do/did you have a close relationship with any of your grandparents?
No I did not. They were wonderful and I loved them deeply but not the kind of relationship that I would hope to have with my grandchildren. One of my sisters granddaughters stays with them almost every weekend, she is ten and loves to be with them. I know they are close.
5. When did you last have a family portrait taken?
We haven't had a professional one done since the kids were in grade school. We did our own photo last Christmas.
6. What does the word patriotism mean to you?
Love for your country!
7. Do you like to play cards and if so, what's your favorite card game?
I do like to play cards but we don't do it very often. We like Texas hold them a lot and poker. I love solitaire but only play in Mammoth Lakes with actual cards. Don't find time to play on the computer much. My husband loves Spider Solitaire.
8. Insert your own random thought here.
I never really gave much thought to gaining an hour when the time changes. Never really felt the impact of it until yesterday. After bowling I ran several errands. When I got in the car to head home I saw that it was 2:30pm, then I realized I never changed the time in the car so I gained my hour!!! That was a fun surprise.
Thank you Joyce for the questions. Click on the button above and join us for Wednesday Hodgepodge.

I'm in a time warp in my car too...I have trouble remembering how to reset the clock there. We've had our heat on several times since early October. I wish we didn't need it quite so early.
Lovely family photo...enjoy your day!
Cool answers! My favorite Kitchen gadget is my potato slicer, but EVERY gadget in thhis house breaks so its only a matter of time :O(
Blessings, Joanne
I have one of those can openers, too. But it cranks a little hard, so it may be time to look into getting a new one. We've had our heat one for a while now ... and right now I've also got the fireplace going to take the chill off. I like gaining the hour, but I hate it being dark so early. By the time I get done cleaning up after dinner, it's been dark so long that I think it's time to go to bed. :-(
I loved the family Christmas picture. I love au naturale pics and not studio versions with fake backgrounds. I am taking photos of a couple this Sunday. Can't wait to post them on my Project 365 next week. Have a great week.
I haven't changed the time on our stove yet, so yesterday I served the kids lunch wayyy too early :)
What is Spider Solitaire? My husband plays Solitaire but I've never heard of that one. Sounds fun!
I always tell ppl that we don't gain an hour we just get the one back we had from changing back before lol
i did notice it tho when i was driving to the game at 5:30 and it was dark
i was really close with my grandma on my moms side till she died in 98 and my other grandma the one that just had a bday but my grandpas died when I was a baby
Gaining an hour in the middle of the day = awesome! Blessings!
time changes with a toddler are hard. lol. i never did family pictures when i was little - i think that's why I make us do it so much with G. and I need a new can opener
I wanted to have the kind of relationship my daughter had with my mother with my own grandchildren. Sadly that is only possible with the two who live in Alabama.
I think photos like this one are better than studio portraits, more natural.
I haven't found my hour yet....Mr Smokey wants me to get up at the regular time and I'm not going to bed an hour earlier either. It always takes two are three weeks for my body to adjust. Why can't we just set the time halfway in between and leave it there.
Mama Bear
You have a beautiful family!
Time change was different for us this year because when we moved to our new home we moved an hour behind, now we gained another hour too, so we got two hour difference now!...We got double the sleep!
I liked your family picture from last year, Debby! Nicely done!! We keep our heat about 68 day/66 night; we've had to run it a few times, but I hear the next two days are supposed to be good ones as far as warmth!
I hope you have a good day!
betty
I love the photo. Great answer to number 2. Have a great day--Yeah, with you on time change in a vehicle, I never fix/change the clock in the car until about a week before the time changes back.
The can opener is on my Christmas list. Our new home in the country doesn't have trash pick-up service so i have to wash and recycle all the cans. I've cut myself three times this week on sharp can edges.
I liked the "When is impatience a virtue" question. I think it's when you need to get into the bathroom and you have to pound on the door to get someone else out before you pee in your pants. :)
I am using my 'second' can opener like you describe... I never want a rough edge one again!! About the grandparents, we didn't grow up very close to ours either. They were 'busy' I suppose and we didn't get to spend time with them.. just to play. My kids have a very special relationship with their grandparents (SOMETIMES I THINK THEY LOVE THEM MORE THAN THEIR OWN PARENTS) I hope to have that same kind of relationship with Avery... so far, so good... he LOVES to play with Grandma!
I hadn't thought of impatience in the sense of medical treatment, but you are SO right!
this was so fun. it helps us to know
you a little better.
I spent nearly every weekend with my mother's parents and I loved every second of it! My dad's mother was the town librarian and I loved spending my summer days reading there with her!
I hope that I feel better about being in front of the camera this year so we can all be in a photo like the one y'all took! I love it!
I just pulled out the family portraits we had done about 6 years ago. They were still boxed up from being shipped to me! Your photo is lovely :0) It's nice to have a professional one done, but just getting together is fabulous.
I've never heard of such a can opener--I'll have to look for it. I always shudder at the thought of my kids slicing their finger/hands . . . but then I remember that they never bother to take out the trash, so what's the likelihood of them getting hurt? I should worry about myself!
I love my coffee also.. I just changed my clock in my car too yesterday.. I was using my phone so I knew the real time.. Have a great day..
Debby you are so thoughtful about the lids I never would have thought about that!
That movie and that moment are so special.
I loved that picture :)
How fun to suddenly discover you had an extra hour of time!
I love your family portrait :)
Very interesting girlfriend. I think for me it is the computer! Love your family picture. Lovely. And the time change made me tired! Lol sandie
Your family picture is lovely, Debby. I can tell from your responses that you are a very kind and considerate woman...Christine
Great answers & great family pic. I think that is neat wrapping the kids in paper. I would never thought of it.
I dislike this time change so hard to get used to. My kids no sooner get home from school & it is time for them to come in.
I love spider solitare too!
I love spider solitare too!
Kitchen gadgets are the best. I have new knives that are the absolute best. No more squashed food! I had a very close relationship with my paternal grandma, I miss her so much.
I'm with your husband...I like spider solitaire....Again really liked reading your answers.....Have a great day out there and I love your pics of your little pups.
I enjoyed reading your answers and I especially love your answer for #2. You gave a perfect example!
I don't think I've ever heard of Spider Solitaire. I play Solitaire on my phone..especially at night when I can't sleep. The hubby and I play Foot Canasta from time to time..but he's so competitive, I'd rather not play. :-)
Love your random thought! That happened to me too! I forgot to change the time on the stove and thought I was running late for breakfast at my sons house! Then I realized I had time to get there early and help him cook! He liked that!
Have a great day Debby...thank you for stopping by and signing up for the giveaway! Good luck to you!
Good questions. Is a computer considered a gadget? #5... 2008
Take care and have a nice day :-)
And thanks for your recent comment on My Blog :-)
I need a can opener like yours! I've cut myself on a can lid, and it hurts like the dickens!
Beautiful family photo, Debby. I love your hair!
I like those new can openers too, even though I find them tricky to learn how to use.
Your family us just lovely!
I hope to be that kind of grandparent too!
Thanks Debby glad you are coming by..
What a great picture of the family. We never noticed the time change because we were up early and doing all sorts of things.
I have one of those can openers too! And I love it, lol. I never thought I would say that about a can opener...but it is so nice to not have those sharp edged top of the cans to have to deal with, or worry about the kids getting cut on one should they somehow get their hands on one.
Such a lovely family photo...it came out so well I don't think you need them done professionally. I love that you guys took one together...is it a tradition you still continue to do, or was that a one time thing?
I love cards, but haven't played in such a long time. I think that since computers, iPads, and smart phones came along, things like playing cards is something rarely done...unless you go to a casino etc. Neil's family used to have poker night every week when I first moved to NYC about 8 years ago, but that has since petered out as his mother caused so many fights with all the other card players, they no longer wanted to come here.
What a treat to have gained that extra hour! It's kind of like finding an extra $10 in the coat pocket of last years winter coat!
Gaining an hour is the best surpise. I won't like it so much next Spring.
I love the family portrait! You are all beautiful.
I love playing "speed" with Rook cards. It never gets old.
I think your answer to number 2 is spot on.
