Thank you Joyce :)
1. Summer officially rolls in with the Hodgepodge this week, for those of us in
the Northern hemisphere anyway. What song says summer 2012 to you?
Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (Will Smith-1998)
2. What's your favorite quintessential summer food?
I don't think I have one. It's not like I say "I can't wait for summer so I can have...." this or that! I will say that when I think of summer I may think about sweet corn or watermelon compared to other times of year.
3. I've spent a lot of time traipsing up and down the NJ Turnpike in recent
weeks. Did you know the rest areas on the turnpike are named after people who
lived or worked in NJ? Clara Barton,
Walt Whitman, James Fenimore
Cooper, Molly
Pitcher, Joyce
Kilmer, Thomas Edison, and Gover Clevland just to
name a few. Of those I listed, who would you most like to have known and why?
Well I only recognize two names, Walt Whitman and Thomas Edison. I think I would choose Walt Whitman.
4. At what age did you move out of your parent's house and what prompted
the move?
I was 4 months shy of turning 21. My marriage to Mark prompted my move 40 years ago. I was never one of those who had dreams of a career or college. Being a wife and mother was my dream.
5. What's more satisfying to you-saving time or saving money?
Being 60 I feel more motivated to save time, make the best of the years I have yet in order to enjoy those years we need to save money! Let's face it, saving money is definitely satisfying. You would think by now I would have learned how to do that :)
6. Name something you think brings out the good in people.
Well it isn't like my day yesterday when my car was dead in the garage. Had to have AAA out and then was able to drive it to the dealer. I had many choice words to say to them! It's too long to go into.
I think kindness and respect can bring out the good in people.

7. This last question comes to you courtesy of Kathy over at Reflections...will you be taking
a vacation or a staycation this summer? If so where will you go? If a staycation
is on the calendar have you made any special plans to fill the time?
I have a post coming up on June 29th about our vacation this year. Yes we normally take one each year. We always go to Mammoth Lakes, CA and stay in a cabin on Lake George at 9,200 ft. elevation.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
Something is going on that I don't understand. Over the last 5 1/2 years in this house we have had maybe two gophers and they were gone within a short period of time. This year we struggled with a family for over two months who made hole after hole in our yard.
Things are finally back in order but then comes the bunnies. This is the first year with bunnies here. So the bunnies now take off all the heads of the newly planted areas, eating the stems to the flowers. They also nibbled some strawberries Sunday night! I now have to go out into the yard with a broom each morning because of their never ending poops. (Eww...and yes, even on the steps going up into the above ground spa) Now what we haven't seen, and I am thanking God daily for this, are the gopher snakes and coyotes. So what is going on, is our environment changing. The circle of life is broken.

Up here it's bears! They are walking down the mains streets of even our bigger cities. Not sure what it is either. Sometimes I think they are all taking back their land! Hope your car is better now and looking forwarded to your vacation.
Hope whatever's going on with your car has been straightened out. It's almost time for your vacation ... are you excited? Hope you'll share pictures with us.
We had a problem with moles in Maryland and we tried every trick in the book to get rid of them. Nothing worked and they wreaked havoc in our yard. There is something you can spray on plants to help keep the rabbits away...also you can buy something called dried blood and put it around the base of the plants. If it rains though you have to reapply so not sure how effective it really is.
I love that song :)
Love sweet corn and watermelon...two of my favorite summer things :) We got to big bear to our cabin every summer Ca is amazing that there are so many different things to do and see.
We have friends who are going to Mammoth Lakes next month to run...if you can believe that! Sure sounds like a beautiful place! Can't wait to read your post!
I haven't thought of that song in ages. It's a fun one and does scream "summer!"
We live in the suburbs, but "country" is pretty close. We've had deer, turkeys, ducks, possums, skunks, and even a bear and her cub in the backyard! As we encroach on their spaces they have no where else to go and they are losing their fear of us. These run-ins are going to become more and more the norm.
Hmmmm Sweet corn! I remember when my mom used to put it in the freezer, she would cook in some then part of it she would cut off the cob in a big dishpan. I would go up and steal sections of the corn. It was soooo good! I love fresh corn on the cob, but am pretty partial to the Green Giant's little cobs too. Good stuff! Hope you have a great timee on your vacatation, looking forward to pictures!
until next time... nel
Loved your answer to #4, I left home to marry my husband, named Mark also :) 26 years later :)
Wow, Lake George sounds gorgeous!
We had deer that helped themselves to our tomato and pepper plants the weekend after they were planted. Ya think the critters are bulking up this summer for a nasty cold winter? :(
I had the same dream and goal in life that you did. I think a lot of us did back in 1972. It's interesting that we got married just 6 days apart!
I hope you get your "critter" problems under control soon...rabbits are sort of like deer, they'll eat everything!
That was my dream in 72 as well. I ended up being the first of my family to graduate from high school and college. Made the parents proud...of course it took me til I was 30 to get the college thing down. Could not decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. Loved the random thought too. We are dealing with coyotes right now...and have a dachsund who likes to go out back off the leash. It means one of us has to go with him.
I will take anything as long as I don't get any snakes but we do have snakes. Just saw a dead one on the treet in front of the house today....Christine
Summer and watermelon. It is going to in the 90;s plus from here on out. Phew. I hope you get your car problems settled. Shouldn't have that with a new car! sandie
critters are fun to watch but they sure can cause a lot of damage...
I love watermelon...fresh corn on the cob...
Ehhhh!!! Snakes would freak me out! Does Skye bark at the rabbits? My two humane society specials seem to bark at everything! Pele' woke me up in the middle of the night when Jeff was out of town on business (pre-kids) and scared the crap out of me... turns out it was a cat walking across the lawn... (sigh).
On a side note. It's good to be back and reading/ writing blogs. Yeah for summer!!!!
Hugs-
L
I love your #1 answer. I miss Will Smith rapping!
We have Bunnies and love them....none of the problems you've mentioned. Honey Bear does leave patches of clover around the back edges for them to eat....we put netting over the Strawberries and the only problem we've had there are the June Bugs...
We had some big rats outside at our house in Tennessee, the pest control people came out and put out baited traps and they were soon gone..
Sorry about your car trouble. Honey Bear had some problems with his battery Tuesday and I sent him off on Wednesday to buy a new one before his day of work....we have a battery charger here at home so he was able to start it up after a night of charging.
My X son by law has a mini cooper.
Have a happy Summer,
Mama Bear
We've had an increase in bear sightings in our county - We've taken so much of the animal's habitat they have no where else to go.
