WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

Volume 188
Thank you Joyce!
Click on over and join us.....

1.  What's something you wanted to do this summer that you never got around to actually doing? Spend time at the beach. I have had the biggest desire ever to spend a week at the beach or even just a few days. I guess I could get in my car and just go for the day, we are not that far away!

2. Share a favorite memory of your own back -to-school days as a child.
Don't know if it is a favorite but it is the only one I have always remembered. My first day of Kindergarten was really a challenge for the teacher. I did not want to be there.

Actually our sweet male principle came over and walked me around the school. He took me to peek through the window of my brother's classroom, sister's classroom and my cousin's classroom trying to convince that they like school.

Then he took me over to the nurse who drew pictures on top of both of my hands with Mecuricome! That's all I remember, not sure how the rest of the day went.

3.  What's one chore or daily task you prefer doing 'old-school' ?
I don't have a clue! Sometimes I like to do dishes by hand and I always iron the tops I wear.

4.  Share something you've learned in life through the 'school of hard knocks'.
As a rule I believe there is a solution to most every issue you encounter if you take the time to step back and not panic.

Our daughter has a tendency to overreact big time and if she takes the time to breathe and think it out the solution will find her a direction to go in while calming her down. I always say their is a solution to every problem unless someone has passed away.........

5.  As a child, did you mostly bring or buy your lunch for school? What was your favorite thing to find in your lunchbox?
Actually we lived down the street and went home for lunch K-8th grade.

6. Football season is upon us which has me wondering... how big of a sports fan are you (not just football) ? On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being 'I scream at the players through my television screen' and 1 being 'is knitting a sport?' where do you fall in fandom?
I would be a 2 for football, I would be more likely to watch golf which I might be a 5 at. I sometimes sit and go through magazine while Mark is watching football so I can spend some time with him.

7. Share a favorite quote you think might inspire students of all ages at the start of a new school year.

i liked your advice. and your first day of kindergarten. :) not much on watching sports. i can be interested in it, however, but i'm not usually a watcher. my sis-in-law is an absolute screamer, yeller, LOUD sports watcher. oy!

You have a wonderful blog with good sense sprinkled through all of your answers to the Hodgepodge questions. I especially enjoyed reading about your first day of Kindergarten. What thoughtful people your school principle and school nurse were!

GO TO THE BEACH!!! You live in California - go to the beach.
LOL- I know its easier said than done. I miss the beach more than anything in the world.
I love football and my husband and I yell at the TV like pros during a game.
That's a sweet memory of the nurse and principle and i'm so jealous that you got to go home for lunch. We were not allowed to leave campus at all.

We still do dishes by hand, too, unless there's a pile of them. It's easier than loading and unloading the dishwasher :)

Loved your memory of the principal taking you around to peek through the windows on your first day of Kindergarten :)

About the beach, you should go...and let the sand and surf melt your worries away :)

i have no fond memories of school at all. i have one memory from 2nd grade... my cousin is 4 months younger, i was in 2nd when she started 1st, she howled so loudly they took me out of my class for 2 days and i had to sit and hold her hand....
my school of hard knocks has told me to be careful whom I trust

I love the inspiration quotes you shared, Debby...I think they could apply to anyone, young or old. There is, usually, a solution to every problem, you're right...unless your daughter is dating someone you don't approve of and she's almost 18. Not easy!

I agree, kids think everything is the end of the world. I used to get annoyed when someone told me that especially in public. I remember a teacher in high school left a friendly reminder in my yearbook too. How nice to have gone home, i wish i was able to do that, i'd miss my pets and my poor dog needed to be let out.

Great answers and I love your two quotes at the bottom. That is a very fun Kindergarten memory you shared!!

HI Debby! I walked home from school for lunch too. What a nice break in the day! I wonder if anyone really does that anymore?
Love your quotes here. What beautiful thoughts for students returning to class.
I like football, but sometimes I'm reading the paper or Crushing Candy at the same time! I want to be with my husband too.
Blessings!

You're right! It's so easy to react with emotions when something challenging comes up, but there's always a compromise or solution if we take a sec to calm down and look at the issue directly. I'm quick to over-react too and it's something (along with worrying) that I am trying to give to the Lord. Great words of encouragement!

I vote for driving to the beach for the day! Although....it is jellyfish season on the eastern shore here.

I am like your like daughter-the panic button turns on and I just need to take a breath. Wish I lived close to the beach-definitely go!

I am so impressed about your principal walking you around the school - so sweet - that would never ever happen these days.

How fun to be able to go home for lunch! Nowadays I don't even know if the kids can go home if they live close by.

This would be the right time of the year to go to the beach with all the summer crowds thinning out a bit! Laguna Beach would be so pretty just about now!

Aww, your kindergarten day sounds rough. I hope you get your beach day!

I hated school too! That's cute about the principle and nurse trying to help you.
My husband grew up in MI and always went home for lunch. I grew up in GA and hated cafeteria food, so I usually took a sack lunch.

what a shock - my favorite part of back to school was the new outfit!

I'm not really a fan of sports. I can get into football at times...usually when my alma mater is playing :-)

Sometimes I feel like I do a lot of chores 'old school'-LOL! I don't wash our clothes by hand, but dry them on the line when I can. Also don't have a dishwasher, so all dishes are done by hand.

I hope you make it to the beach! I'm sure it's beautiful where you are :-)

Hi Debby, I missed this yesterday but loved reading your answers. I was never a t.v. sports person, until we moved to Co. and watched football on some friends big screen-that did it, I was hooked and now we have a big screen and I love watching football. Hope you have a blessed Thursday.
Hugs, Noreen

That was such a cute picture of you being escorted around the school by the principal and the visit to the nurse. It must have worked. :-)

I just love that you could go home for lunch! I wish they would bring that back! What a sweet time in the middle of the day!

Ahh what a sweet guy to do that. An angel sent to you :)

I so wanted to go the ocean this year with the boys, sadly never got around to it.
