Our prompt is: My First School
My first school was Komarek in North Riverside, IL. We lived a block away from school. We could walk home for lunch which was nice. I attended Komarek from Kindergarten all the way through 8th grade.
We drove by my grade school when we were in Illinois for our class reunion in September. The walkway between the buildings, which crosses 13th avenue which is the street I lived on, was not there when I went to the school.
I recently shared my first day of school on another post but here it is again.....I did not want to go to Kindergarten. I cried and made a big fuss. The Principle came and walked me around the school and showed me my sisters class, my brothers class and my cousins class. Then he took me to the nurses office. I'm guessing maybe he wanted to make sure I was okay.
All I remember is that the nurse made drawing on the top of my hands with mercurochrome. What happened after that I have no clue. I remember walking to the corner grocery store which wasn't very far from our house and I would buy candy at lunchtime. I also remember when Sweet Tarts came out and they were my favorite!
The other memory I have is being in the library when an announcement came over the loud speaker about JFK being shot and killed. That was a sad day in history. I think I was in 7th grade.

an adorable cutie you are!
I think it's good to remember. I didn't want to go to kindergarten either. I was a real homebody and attached to my mom. It was a tough year.
You were so cute - well, you still are!!
GOD BLESS!
How fun to walk down memory lane...what an adorable little girl you were, Debby!
My goodness....if I didn't know better, this could be ME!! Not only are we similar in looks [at least at that age] but the time frame and not wanting kindergarten and walking to school a block away....going to the grocery store, Kennedy...etc. etc. It's like deja vu!!
Well, I am 7 or 8 years ahead of you, but we have very similar experiences. I was in Jr. High when we heard Pres. Kennedy had been shot. We did grow up in a better time, I think. I have so enjoyed thie Meme and look forward to more fun memories!
you were a cutie, i agree with tex. i went to 4 schools in first 8 years.. not even sure my first grade school is still standing. 1950 was first grade and they did not have kindergarten then.
I remember to the minute the day JFK was shot and I am not American. I was never big on sweet tarts, they weren't sweet enough for me.
How cute are you?!!! I love sweet tarts and I like the chewy ones too. I was not born when Kennedy was shot ( I was born 5 years later). My family remembers vividly - we are from Dallas so...
Oh how I LOVED sweet tarts! Those big ones that made your tongue raw! LOL I don't remember JFK being shot but I was only 5 at the time. I do, however, remember the moon landing. I wasn't allowed to watch the news when I was growing up. My parents thought it was too violent. I guess they were right about that.
Seems like everybody lived in a neighborhood with a little store in walking distance. I definitely remember the day Kennedy was killed, but I was in junior Hugh. Your pic is so cute.
Hi Debby,
What a fun meme!
My first school was actually where my mom & dad went to school. Back then it went from 1st - 12th.
When I went it was 1st - 6th.
I went to Kindergarten in a different county. They tell me I was so bossy I even told the principal what to do. LOL
Oh, how I remember mercurochrome.
What an adorable photo, I love that smile!
You were so cute. Hard to remember the days we lived so close we walked home for lunch. I was in 5th grade and I remember the day Kennedy was shot as well.
What an adorable school picture of you! I remember being in the 4th grade when the announcement came on about JFK being shot.
I remember my first school so well and how Mom sent me out the front door to walk about a block down the road, unattended. I loved school and didn't go to Kindergartner. Cute post! Happy week!
What a cute school picture of yours, Debby! Yum on the Sweet Tarts :)
I was in 1st grade when hearing about Kennedy's assassination, but it does still stick in my mind years later. I would be curious if the school I went to for kindergarten is still standing. Might have to do some research about that.
betty
What great memories! I love that picture of you! I drove by the school I went to a few years ago, and nothing had changed, on the outside at least.
You were a cutie! I loved reading your memories; I remember my dad taking me. Hope you have a blessed day!
Hugs, Noreen
It seems to be a common thread, many not wanting to go to Kindergarten!! I wonder why the nurse drew on your hands?
Such nice memories and you were such a cutie! I was in 6th grade when President Kennedy was killed. Oh how our teacher cried when giving us the news...such a,sad day.
I love reading about your first school! I wish I had done this post too, but maybe I'll do it one day. I think it's interesting that many around my age had kindergarten. We didn't here, just right into first grade! My older brother went to private kindergarten, but my older sister and I didn't and they may have started having kindergarten by the time the younger siblings started school.
I remember Sweet Tarts!! they were so good.
what a bad memory to have though - of JFK.
For me, it was John Lennon being killed. I can remember all the teachers crying.
Aw, great photo! I was alive when JFK died, but just a baby so I don't remember it.
OMGosh you're so stinking cute!!!
