We received our AAA Westways Magazine the other day and I was looking through it. They had a little blurb about Route 66 and a free map you could pick up at your local AAA office. So yesterday I stopped in at ours on the way to some shopping and a movie.
The woman had to go ask someone else and they found one. Then I asked if it was possible to get more. She went to find out where they were and gave me two more. I was so excited!
This way I could have one, Adam could have one and Amber could have one too! I know it sounds silly but there is definitely a Route 66 history for us, first of all coming from Illinois where Route 66 Starts in Chicago at Lake Michigan.
When Mark and I bought our first house in Western Springs, IL we were just 7 house in off of Route 66 which was called Ogden Avenue. Adam and Amber were born while we lived in that house.
Fast forward to California and the house we bought in Fontana, CA. Our subdivision was off of Foothill Blvd which is Route 66. They were around 8 and 10 when we moved into that house. We lived there for 17 years.
It shows you Route 66 through the states from
Illinois to California.....
It also points out attractions you can see along the way in each state.
Then of course you can add the fact that Adam & Tristen's condo is just a few blocks from Route 66 in L.A. and only 4.5 miles from the end of the route in Santa Monica, CA.
Now when I was a very young girl we took a road trip from Illinois to California and Route 66 was the way to go. There were not many major highways back then.
Since my dad was managing the movie theater at the time we were given passes to a studio in Los Angeles. I'm thinking we went to Disneyland too but I'm not sure.
One thing that I remember was that I meet Denise the Menace (Jay North) who was filming the TV show. The camera man even let me look through the lens of the camera. We also saw Jerry Lewis filming Visit to a Small Planet. He actually came off the set and talked with us.
My dad has driven Route 66 from Illinois to California 3 times in his lifetime. He said it was pretty hot since there wasn't any air conditioning in the car!
Those were the days........

Route 66 runs through Illinois into Missouri not too far from me. I remember when we had to drive along Route 66 to go to Springfield to visit my aunt and uncle. I wasn't all that young either. ;-)
What a wonderful story from your past. I think I would love to do that too - wonder if people do that any more. Great ties to the family and memories too. I see now why you like movies so much!
i like that your family has history (and now a map to go with it) for rte 66!
enjoyed your family history.
I've heard so much about Route 66 down through the years so I really loved hearing your special memories about it... :)
I had an uncle who said he would come out and visit us when Route 66 came all the way to California. He never did come but I do remember that when I hear Route 66. One of the cities about 3 hours away has ties to Route 66; I hope to go and visit it some day and see the memorabilia there.
How cool with that map you got Debby!
betty
such a great story! I love the map!
What a nice find. I have heard of route 66 never been on it.
Route 66 goes through or near Amarillo because i have some pictures when i was there of some markers.
Very cool of all the history you have with the route!!
Neat! Those look like great maps too!
That is really neat!
I drove a bit of Route 66 a couple of weeks ago when I went to pickup my Granddolls for a visit . I drove just out of OKC towards Tulsa. Beautiful this time of the year!
Such history on that route.
.. & makes me think of the movie, Cars :)
Do you remember the tv show about Route 66? In fact, it might have been called that-it was about two young guys in their corvette.
Brings back so many memories. Glad you found the maps.
Hugs,
Noreen
No wonder you were excited to get your hands on that map! What fantastic memories you have attached to Route 66!
As a little girl, my mom made the trip back-and-forth across Route 66 several times from Chicago to California. One time, we took a road trip with my sons to retrace the route. We picked it up in Barstow, and went as far as St. Louis. It was such a great time! The history, the people, the old relics - a fun nostalgic journey to a time when life was slower.
My husband and I have been pondering some day getting a motorhome and taking a few weeks to travel the Mother Road!! In fact, on our way home from vacation in Utah the other day, we traveled through a town called Amboy. Lo and behold, there on the highway were Route 66 markers in the asphalt. It gave us a new *itch* to maybe make that dream trip come true!!
GOD BLESS!
