A DAY WE WILL NEVER FORGET 9/11

IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES

September 11, 2001

Keeping their families in our prayers.

I remember that day so well. My father was in town staying with my aunt and uncle in Orange, CA. I had just gotten home from the airport where I had dropped my husband off for a trip he had to make. It was like 6:30 AM here in California and for some reason I turned on the TV. At that time the first building had been hit. Then when the second one was hit I called my aunts house to tell them. Then I received a call from my husband asking me if something was going on. He was sitting on the runway but they were not taking off. I of course told him what was going on and I went back to pick him up. I personally didn't know anyone in the building or anywhere else in the country who was killed or injured but I did bowl with a girl whose cousin was killed in the towers. It was a horrific day.

I wasn't yet living in NYC when 9/11 happened but my husband & his family were. Neil could see the smoke from our home, there was even some debris in their backyard. My brother in law lost three very close friends who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. The streets that each of these men grew up on are now named after them. I was at home watching as this all unfolded on television, my father called to wish me a happy birthday and I didn't even remember it was my birthday because I was so horrified by what was unfolding before my eyes. Such a sad, sad day. We have driven by ground zero many times and it's this gaping hole amongst all these tall buildings, it fills me with sadness for those who lost their lives that day.

I was working that day and when we saw the first images in the afternoon (local time), it was a bit 'far from my bed show' (as the saying goes in the Netherlands). It still is a bit, probably because it is still a bit unreal.

I was at work. I remember watching the tower collapse and wondering what would follow. I think it's one of those moments burned into all our memories.
