WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

Click on the button and join us!

1. Sunday was the first day of spring. So they say. Ahem.
What is your favorite outdoor springtime activity?
Living in Southern California we have a lot of nice weather so I can't really say that I have one but we have gone out to the desert to see the cactus in bloom in the Spring. Right now there are acres of flowers in bloom in Carlsbad, CA which we hope to visit soon.

2. Who would you want to come into your kitchen to cook dinner for you?
I don't really watch many of the Food Network shows but I was hooked for awhile on the Jamie Oliver show so I will say him. (If my mom could come back from Heaven to cook for me that would be awesome)

3. When did you last fly a kite?
It's so long ago that I can't remember or even guess.

4. What topic puts you to sleep faster than anything?
Probably politics.

5. Which flowers do you associate with specific people, places, or events?
Well my mother liked gardenias so I always think of her when I see one or smell the scent.

6. What significant historical events took place during your elementary school days?
The assassination of John F. Kennedy November 22, 1963. I think I was in 7th grade and I remember being in the library at the time. Now don't get me wrong, this was a horrible tragedy that happened but my attention was centered on my best friend. She was a total wreck because not to long before that day she had lost her father to brain cancer. She knew what it was like to lose a loved one, she knew more about death then I did. This is my friend who lost her 12 year old son to suicide 11 years ago. Her life has been very hard. (I don't remember my parents talking to me about this event at all)

7. Do you swear? Do you pseudo-swear? (You know crap, shoot, friggin'?)
I do swear when I'm really made. When I'm out, like at bowling yesterday, I will pseudo-swear when I get upset!

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I was sent this link in an email and I thought it was pretty interesting. When you go to the link move your mouse over the pictures and it will show you an aerial shot of a section in Japan and as you move the mouse it shows you what it looks like now.

Our son and DIL lives in San Diego and she says that seasons just moves on the calendar because where she lives, it's all Spring. What a joy to not know winter.I'm sorry you had a good friend who lost his dad. That is hard.

The link to those pictures is so sad! I felt like I was using an eraser as I moved the mouse. :-( My dad had just been to Japan for work a month before the earthquake and he found out last week that the hotel he stayed in is gone....very, very sad :-(

Very interesting.
I remember what I was doing the day Kennedy was shot.

Politics put me to sleep, too...
The link that you shared really shows the devastation of Japan...So sad!

What has happened in Japan is beyond heartbreaking and I think it's our duty, as Americans, to help out in any way we can.

My heart breaks for Japan.

That link is amazing and sad all at the same time.

Those pictures of Japan are incredible. The geologist in me is fascinated, but the person in me is just appalled.

Now I want to fly a kite. Politics used to put me to sleep too, but now that I work in it, I find it interesting.

In elementary school, we had the Challenger explosion.

Tammy Enjoy Life said...

Forgot about politics-yep they will do it everytime. Thanks for the pictures of Japan.

Michelle said...

WOW! Thank you for the link.
I can't imagine the devastation.
Japan is in our prayers.

Call me crazy, but I'm not fond of Spring...and I think its very sweet that you'd like for your mom to cook for you again.

great answers..
though number six broke my heart a bit for your friend..

have a wonderful day!

I was having the same thoughts as far as how much we, as kids, were told regarding tragedies, deaths, and war. My dad was away at war but my younger sister and I did not have a clue what he actually did there. And we didn't watch it on tv/internet/etc non-stop. Was that better or worse? In some ways I think better, at least up to the teen years.

I can empathize with what your friend went through as far as losing a loved one and then dealing with a national tragedy. I lost my dad five months before 9/11. I grieved very heavily for the victims' families because I was still grieving so heavily for my father (he died very unexpectedly). I am so sorry that your friend has had to endure such difficult circumstances. I'm sure that she is very thankful for the friendship you share.

3. When did you last fly a kite?
YESTERDAY! HAILEY AND I HOOK LONG STRINGS ON SAFEWAY PLASTIC BAGS AND FLY THEM, I KNOW THATS SO WHITE TRASH BUT THEY MAKE THE BEST KITES EVER!

4. What topic puts you to sleep faster than anything? ANYTHING ABOUT SPORTS

5. Which flowers do you associate with specific people, places, or events? ANY KIND OF FLOWER REMINDS ME OF MY DADDY BECAUSE HE USED TO HAVE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND HUGE GARDENS FULL OF DIFFERENT FLOWERS

Pseudo-swear is a funny way to put it. I definitely say things like "shoot" or "Heck." But more often, I've got a mouth like a sailor.

Thank you Debby for sharing such a wonderful post. My heart also goes out to the country of Japan. Debby, I so appreciated all your encouraging comments to me. Blessings.

Gerber daisy makes me think of my Mom as it has become my favorite flower. A red one means the world to me. We love going to the park when Spring will really get here. It is a fun time for all of us. I want Alexis to come cook in my kitchen.

Oh boy last Summer my husband decided to get out his huge fancy kite. It was such a mess.

Have a great night..

I had seen that link before...it's just sickening to see the difference.

Wow! Those pictures are amazing- not in a good way but amazing how it shows the before and after- it is horrific. We have a large population of Japanese Nationals here and at our church and it is so very, very sad. Thank you for sharing- I put it on my facebook.

When you talk about historical events I think more now of 911 (obviously I wasn't a student at the time but) as the teacher I remember so vividly what my students were saying and the need they felt to help. I still wonder how their 7/8 year old minds could wrap around the tragedy but as you know it was everywhere and hard to escape.

Love reading your stuff!
Hugs-
L

I said politics too.

I had a gardenia in my wedding bouquet. My sister agreed to help me pick out my flowers and be my maid of honor as long as I'd let you have a gardenia in her bouquet. So that's how I ended up having a gardenia too. lol

betty said...

wow, that makes such an impact to see before and after, you just wonder if they will ever recover in Japan.......

I did see a report on the news about the flowers in Carlsbad; got to make it a point to go and see them this year. I remember driving by in years past and seeing the beautiful of the flowers from I-5!

I was in elementary school when JFK was assassinated and they sent us home from school. I remember all the adults being so upset but I was only 7 and a little confused about the importance of what happened. I think CRY's comment about flying grocery bags as kites is so great. Talk about recycling and having fun all at the same time!

Donna @ The House on the Corner said...

I got so caught up looking at the pictures of Japan I forgot to come back and comment ;-) They were just amazing. Hard to believe how quickly everything was just wiped away. Kinda reminds me of that George Carlin bit about how little effect we would have on old Mother Earth and when she was tired of us, she would just shake us off, like a dog shakes the fleas off of it's back.

I would love for my mom to cook me one more meal.

Have a great day!

I never swore once until my kids went off to college. Now I'll throw them around for fun and for shock value. They think it's hilarious because I'll use them out of context.

Did that kinda make you want to fly a kite when you answered that question? It makes me want to!
