WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

Thank you Joyce!

1. When the children of today grow up, what do you think they'll say about this period in time? What do you most hope they remember?
I think our children have seen a lot of horrific disasters although they are not new to our world but TV certainly makes them stand out more. They will surely remember all the technology but what I hope they remember is how important family is and how we must have compassion for everyone.

2. National Teacher's Day is celebrated in the US of A on the first Tuesday in May, this year May 7th...share how a particular teacher positively impacted you.

Because of things going on in my life I have few childhood memories. There is no teacher who stands out although many teachers gave me a break and passed me when I really shouldn't have been passed. They liked me but truthfully that didn't help me. I would get so many spelling words wrong that the teacher would take me out in the hallway and tell me I didn't have to write the words 100 times like the others. She had me do less. Also I had a math teacher who let me keep a cheat sheet for the multiplication tables and to this day I don't know them. These were both around 5th grade teachers.

3. What's a dish your mama made, that if set in front of you today would whisk you right back to your childhood.

Chicken ala King or Pork, Dumplings and Sauerkraut!

4. Mother May I was a game we played when I was growing up...no pieces, parts, or plugs required. What games from childhood do you remember loving that were also pieces, parts, and plug-free?
Kick the Can - Hide and Seek - Flashlight Tag

5. Besides your own mother, tell us about a woman who influenced you as a child?

I will have to say my grandmothers but truthfully I have few memories from that time in my life. I don't remember anyone giving me any advice or guidance.

6. Mamma Mia! What's the best play or musical you've ever seen?

I haven't seen a lot of stage plays although I love them. Grew up seeing a lot of local plays because my brother was always in the local theater. He is now well known as a director in the local theaters in  Milwaukee, WI which he has been doing for years and years. Since my dad ran a movie theater my whole life I am very fond of musicals in general (Flower Drum Song - Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - Oklahoma - West Side Story - King and I - etc. etc. etc.) but mainly from seeing them at the show. In the last few years I have seen Wicked and Billy Elliot so I will say Billy Elliot!

7. What are three smells that make you feel nostalgic?

Popcorn, Gardenia and fresh cut grass.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.
They often mention rain on the news but sometimes they are wrong or it just doesn't come our way. So Saturday I was going to start washing the windows on the house thinking we were past our rainy season but Mark said they talked about rain. Well I'm glad I didn't wash them because we have had 3 days of off and on rain. I hate it when you wash the windows and then it rains! Also I had to take my clean car out of the garage only to be rained on driving to bowling yesterday :( and don't get me started on the dogs footprints on my clean floors!

It never fails that every time I wash my vehicle, the sky opens up and it comes the biggest downpour you've ever seen! UGH! Sorry that you don't have many memories from your childhood; that must must difficult and my heart goes out to you. There is no better scent than gardenia...I can never get enough of it! Enjoy your day, Debby!

Wash your car, it rains. Wash the house windows, it rains. Never fails! A lot os us played games that required we run a lot. Never saw a fat kid.

I love musicals too.... Now I see how you got your love of movies

ha ha, we've had a lot of rain, too! Someone posted a class pic of our 2nd grade class on facebook. I had two bad memories of that year: peeing in my pants in the library and never making 100 on my multiplication tables test in order to get a prize. (the rest of the class got one of those super dooper sized pencils) I know my multiplication table pretty well these days though. :)

Fun to learn about you better
Hope you get the windows done without the rain.

Cleaning the floors is a sure-fire way to make it rain! Didn't you just clean your floors, too?

Freshly washed things and rainclouds are like dog and fire hydrants!

Everyone keeps saying other smells that make me feel nostalgic too! I remember when Mom popped popcorn and put it in a paper grocery bag half-full for us to have in the car at the drive-in movies. See? I don't even have to smell it to get all nostalgic!

Happy Mothers Day, Debby!

It saddens me to read that you really don't have a teacher that stands out. It really is such an important job.
I still have to wash my windows and do most of my Spring cleaning.

You know I didn't have a teacher I remembered for some of the same reasons - but I had a great mentor the last 20 some years. I don't remember Kick the Can. My mom made chicken a la king too! And we are having more rain this weekend! sandie

the last one I laughed. they have been promising us rain and we need it and it will not come. bob said I will go wash the truck and the rain will come and he did and it did... glad you held off on washing the windows.

on the games, i played the same as you and add Red Light or Stop light.

I have only seen one play, my friends son and daughter were in Fiddler on the roof in highschool and i saw that one.

mother food i remember most is fried chicken.

Seven brides is great. Or Grease. And Mamma Mia of course.
I only saw two in the theater: Phantom of the Opera and 42nd Street (I was 16 then: my love for musicals was born). And I saw the Dutch version of Beauty and the Beast. Front row as well. Good times.

Media has certainly made a difference in our world.....I can't imagine our children even being my age, so I can't imagine!

I'm sorry you don't have many childhood memories......most of mine were good with the exception of some trauma at one time. I sometimes wonder what my own kids will remember.

I laughed at the meal question.......one of the meals I remember best is fish sticks believe it or not! With so many kids, mama fixed easy things we would all eat. I stilly like fish sticks, which is odd when we have so many fresh seafood items in our area.

That's too bad that the teachers in your life didn't do more for you...at least they were nice, I guess! As you probably know, we've had a lot of rain and now everything looks really green!

I think you're right. We're way more in tune with the disasters of the world today because every thing is so accessible.

I'm sorry you had bad experiences with teachers. I can't imagine not challenging my students or holding them to the same standards!

You're not kidding about the doggie footprints. Mooshu thinks that he has to walk on the coffee table the minute the floors are mopped.

The Sound of Music, The Fantasticks, Rent, Wicked, hard to pick...

When I think of teachers I tend to think of my children's more than ones I had, unfortunately. However I did have an Anatomy and Physiology teach in high school who was the most creative/hands on teacher I ever had. She always comes to mind.

We have been enjoying a lot of sun lately however it looks like rain and cold weather for Mother's Day! Didn't Mother Nature get the memo - it is supposed to be perfect for Mother's Day!

I played those games too. Neighborhood games were a nightly thing back then. I also played SPUD and freeze tag. Tag was a big thing in general. I wonder if it still is?

Wicked is one I really hope to see some day.

What a fun set of questions!

I shared so many of your answers!

We had a lot of goulash growing up or chicken and rice, so those would take me back to childhood :-)

I LOVE musicals!! I haven't seen a lot in the theater, but would love to!!

Rain definitely isn't fun sometimes...especially when you have 2 weeks straight of it the spring after you husband dug up the yard putting a water line to the barn....MUD everywhere! LOL! Thankfully we've had a break from that here and it's been sunny and 70 for like 10 days straight! :-)

I am so glad that we are TV free Monday- Thursday with our kids (screen free). And when they do watch it's not the news (which I prefer). Too many scary things out there! Z came home from school telling me about a bomb (Boston), must have heard about it from someone in his kindergarten class! :-( I'm shocked about your teachers... crazy!
Wishing you a super happy Mother's Day!

I've had some absolutely wonderful teachers - too many to go into here, but they definitely shaped my life. And I was just reminiscing about my grandmother today when I was reading a letter she wrote me many years ago.
