~ TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT ~
You know I look forward to this night every year. Been watching since I was a young girl because it was an important night for my father who managed a movie theater.
I have some trivia for you this year. My dad called me about an Oscar show that was on TCM but there was only a half hour left. Thankfully they were showing it again on Saturday morning the 7th of February so I was able to set my DVR to watch it.
It was called "And the Oscar Goes to...." and I really enjoyed it. Here is some trivia that stood out to me:
The very first Oscar's were in 1929. The best movie that year was "Wings" and there were only 12 awards given out.
The first sound film to be at the Oscar's was The Jazz Singer that same year but was ineligible to be nominated for best movie. It did win an Oscar for technical achievement. All Oscar movies after that year had sound.
For many years the Academy would give the newspapers the names of the Oscar winners in advance so their morning paper could list them.
In 1940 it was a banner year for the 10 best movie nominations which all went on to become classics. They were listed as Outstanding Production and Gone With the Wind won that year.
Gone With the Wind
Dark Victory
Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Love Affair
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Ninotchka
Of Mice and Men
Stagecoach
The Wizard of Oz
Wuthering Heights
The L.A. times jumped the gun and gave out the winners names early. Since that time the winners are now kept with Price Warner Securities and sealed off until they are opened on the stage.
The very first televised Academy Awards show was in March 19, 1953, I would have been 1 1/2 years old. NBC offered the Academy one hundred thousand dollars to the broadcast rights and it was held at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. To think I have been to the Pantages Theater 3 times and didn't know that fact!
I thought these facts were interesting and wanted to share them with you.
Have a great Sunday and if you watch tonight I hope you have a good time!
You can go here to print out a ballot for tonight's award show.

I have been trying to find out which channel will air them, but so far no luck! I hope I will find out in time so I can record it to watch tomorrow during the day though.
Thank you for the trivia. I love trivia. It makes life so much more interesting than all the boring facts. Besides it sticks in my head a lot better!!!
the newspapers getting the winners early is interesting! of course, someone always has to spoil it. :)
These were interesting facts to read, Debby. I didn't know about the winners being announced early to the newspapers, so I learned something new today :)
enjoy the show!
betty
Wondering Debby, who do you think will take Oscar home. Here are my predictions.
Movie: Selma (longshot for sure)
Director: Linklater
Lead Actor: Redmayne
Lead Actress: Moore
Supp Actor: Simmons
Supp Actress: Arquette
in 1953 we had no TV and when we got one in 1960 daddy was in charge of what was watched. also it comes on at night after my bed time, so i have never seen it, just pieces of it. i could watch it now with the DVR but since i have seen none of the movies i don't know the stars or the movie..
I am watching now - would love American Sniper to win, but I doubt it! The liberals don't like it. Anyhow the trivial was really interesting.
What a sweet bond for you and your dad! He managed a movie theater... it's no wonder you love seeing movies, like you do.
Hi Debby! I really enjoyed this blog post. I, too, watched that show on TCM and really learned a lot. I just posted about The Oscars a few minutes ago! P.S. We are VERY close in age. I was only 3 months ago in March of 1953!
Debby,
I didn't watch the Oscars last night but loved your post. I guess in years past there is simply too much controversy and people using their five minutes of fame to engage in their political beliefs instead of simply recognizing great work.
Hope to make stopping by more frequent and hoping one day soon since we don't live too far from one another, we might get together for coffee one day.
Love and Hugs ~ Kat
Hi Debby! Did you like the show this year? It went a bit slow for me. I hope you agreed with the awards, because I know you've seen most of the movies that were nominated.
Now I know where you get your love of movies, sounds like your Dad is quite a fan too!
Blessings,
Ceil
Great trivia!
I have only heard of 4 of those classics.
I need to check out the others.
Wow! Back then that was a lot of money
It's still a lot of money, if you ask me.
However, sadly, I know of several people who spend much more than that on their homes. I remember when my dad built and sold homes in the 30-40 thousand range. I think he would flip if he saw how much houses are selling for now :)
I watched most of the event. Those dresses! Jennifer Aniston's dress was to die for!
Interesting facts, I enjoyed reading them. I didn't watch the Oscars, but did check on all the winners. Maybe some surprises??
And yes, I always love seeing what everyone wears. Some dresses are beautiful, some are outrageous. But always a spectacle that's fun to see!
Love that fun trivia. Thanks for sharing.
That's fun trivia and I know you enjoyed the Oscars. It's Mildred with a new blog - I've been away for a few months.
