WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE.....The Late Edition

Volume 210

1. Did you watch The Oscars? How many of the Best Picture nominees have you seen? (American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, Selma, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, and Whiplash)

I saw all of the Best Picture nominated movies plus a few more and yes I watched the Oscar's!

Do you think actors should use their acceptance speeches as an opportunity to promote their political and/or social agenda? Does that sort of speech make you more or less inclined to change the channel?''

I do not think they should use their speeches as an opportunity to promote things but the one young man that did, got a standing ovation. His name is Graham Moore who won for Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game.

2. Speaking of the movies... are you comfortable going to a movie alone? How about dinner in a restaurant (not fast food, but an actual restaurant)? The second half of this question was posed by Carrie who blogs over at It's Not Easy Being Queen. Thanks Carrie!

Yes I am definitely comfortable going to the show alone. I have also eaten in a restaurant alone but it has been a long time since I've done that. When I was divorced from Mark back in 1983 I had a self help book that helped push me into doing those things.

Sometimes after you are divorced you see everything as couples when it doesn't have to be that way. They say to take a book with you to the restaurant and I say why not!  Just because you are single doesn't mean you can't enjoy some of the fun things in life!

3. What's the last home repair or home improvement project you had to pay someone to complete? In hindsight was this a project you could have done yourself?

Well the last home repair was our dryer and we couldn't have done it ourselves. The most recent, that isn't fixed yet, is for our built in oven which we seem to be having trouble getting someone out to repair.

We finally had an appointment last Friday and the man ended up being in an accident. Mark then rescheduled it for Tuesday forgetting that we would be in Palm Springs. No we cannot repair the electrical panel on our oven.

4. Have you ever had Indian food? Like it or no? If you're a fan, what's your favorite dish? Have you ever prepared this yourself at home? Is there an Indian restaurant in your current hometown?

I can't remember ever having Indian food.

5. A song that reminds you of your parents?

I can't think of one but I know they liked to dance.

6. The 26th of February is National Tell A Fairy Tale Day. What's your favorite, or one of your favorite, fairy tales? Do you have any childhood memories associated with aparticular fairy tale?

I do not have any childhood memories associated with a fairy tale. I do like Cinderella but more in the form of the movie "Ever After" with Drew Barrymore. In that movie when she is going to the ball she says "Just Breathe."

7. What's a problem you solved yesterday?

I didn't, I actually took us out of our way to stop at a place to eat that wasn't the place I thought it was :(

8. Insert your own random thought here.

We are back from the Fantasy Springs Casino in the Palm Springs area. Just arrived home about 1 hour ago. The money we brought with us to gamble with unfortunately stayed there.

We had a fabulous time with Michele and Pam. We laughed a lot and had two excellent meals at the buffet. It is definitely one of the best ones we have come across and of course we ate too much food. Isn't that what vacation is all about????

I agree - that is not a platform for your issues to press on others. And I don't mind going to the movies or eating alone either!

I loved Ever After too....I love Drew Barrymore in that role.

I only saw one of the nominated films: Grand Budapest Hotel. I didn't really get it, although it was visually beautiful.
In the end I missed the Oscars. I forgot they were on (even though you sent me the link) and went to bed quite early. Ah well. Such is life.
I love fairytales. I think I watched over 20 last Christmas, when German television aired lots of them in one hour bursts. I have big books of them as well: one with Grimm and one with Hans Christian Andersen. Now I just need Mother Goose (French).

I knew I could count on you to see all the movies : ) Did you like Birdman? How about Whiplash? I think I'd like to see Whiplash. Glad you had a great trip!

Cinderella was my favoriite out of my very large book of fairy tales, Rapunzel my second, Snow White and the one about the man who turned things into gold whichi can't remember the name of.
i knew you like going to the movies by yourself and i would not mind that at all. when i was single i had no money to eat out.
last year we had 2 visits each from plumber and AC repair, none of which we could handle and a tree removed.

Sounds like you had a great time away Debby.
FYI: The video no longer works.

Love learning just a bit more about you through random questions like this. I think we have already talked about the speeches on these award shows and think at times they can be beneficial, but too often they open a huge can of worms.

I haven't seen any of the movies. I wouldn't mind seeing "American Sniper". We didn't watch the Oscars, never do.

I used to have a job where I traveled a lot and I grew to enjoy eating solo in restaurants.

Debby,

Your post brought back memories, and then some.
My Grandmother's oven was built into one of the walls of the kitchen. As I sit here I'm realizing I don't remember where her stove top was. she sure cooked some good meals in that oven.I can remember a lot about that old house. how the rooms were laid out and different things that were in the house. But I sure can't remember the stove top. I'm sure she had one. I even remember the little wood stove she had for heating the home and that goofy cuckoo clock...lol Did everyone have a cuckoo clock back then? :) Not only was it outspoken during the day, that bird would wake you up at all hours through the night.

I see this was a great HodgePodge for you!! All about movies...lol

I can't remember the names songs, but my parents loved to dance, also. However, when I hear some songs I remember them dancing to them.

Well it sounds like you had fun in Palm Springs.
Too bad your money stayed there :(

Glad you had a good time and made it home safely. I think that Hollywood should keep their political views to themselves. Hope you get your oven repaired soon. Have a great weekend!

I'm so bad this year I did not watch. I love you see all the movies, I get to catch them through your post about them :).

I'm with on the Oscars and acceptance speeches. Say your 'thank yous' and kindly have a seat. A trip sounds like such fun about now. Anything to get away from the cold!

I really loved Ever After. In my opinion, it was Drew's best performance ever. I've never had Indian food, either. I would like to try some one day, though. Years ago, I used to go to the movies by myself. To me, it's so much better when you have someone to go with you. It's more fun.

The last time I went to a movie alone, some guy hit on me. I've eaten at restaurants alone, but I prefer to do that when I can sit outdoors. Feels less awkward, because then I can people watch or look at the view.

I didn't watch the oscars..

We seldom go to a movie, and I didn't watch the oscars. I have no respect for the celebrities who are so vocal in their dislike for conservative ideals.
My parents loved gospel music, but I couldn't really name a particular favorite, although my Dad loved Just a Little Talk with Jesus.
I don't mind eating alone, I used to quite often at lunch here I was working. I almost always had a book with me.

Stacy said...

I don't see anything wrong with taking a book most places. I'm not single, but I always have a book with me and if I have to wait somewhere or don't have someone to talk with I just pull it out and read.

I think everyone should be comfortable going to the movies or dinner or wherever alone. It's really rather liberating. I've been to parties by myself before and those are the ones where I meet new people because I have no one to lean on.
