WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE #370

1. The US of A celebrated Memorial Day this past Monday. Does your family have any military ties? If so, tell us about them.

Mark's grandfather served in World War I on his mother's side. His father was a dive bomber in World War II and his uncle on his mother's side fought in the Korean War.

I don't know the history of my family but I know several people serviced in the military. Amber's husband Dylan served as a Marine in the invasion of Iraq in 2003. He was one of the first units to enter Saddam Hussein's palace in Baghdad.

2. Cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, potato chips, mac and cheese, macaroni salad...your favorite BBQ side? How many of these do you make from scratch vs. buying from the deli?

I would have to say that potato salad is my favorite. I have never made it but we are really close to trying a recipe that I came across.

3.  I enjoyed asking this question back when the Hodgepodge was a regular thing...Lake Superior State University posts a list each year of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness. The 2020 list includes-quid pro quo, artisanal, curated, influencer, literally, I mean, living my best life, mouthful (word used by foodies to describe texture of food in their mouth), chirp (basically an insult, you can read more on the website), jelly (short for jealous), totes (short for totally), vibe, and OK Boomer (internet response from millenial to older generation).

Of the words/phrases listed which would you most like to see 'banned'?

I'm thinking I use a few of them but honestly looking at the list I would like to see chirp, jelly, and totes to go. Not that I hear them often but I'm not crazy about abbreviations.

4. I'm sure next year's list will be filled with words springing out of this weird season we're all in currently. What word or phrase associated with the Corona would you be happy to hear less often?

I'm not sure, maybe "sheltering in place", "flattening the curve" and "the new normal." I believe in "social distancing and wearing face masks!"

5.  The month of May wraps up in just a few days. Bid her adieu in ten words or less.

You've given me lows and highs, thankful for the highs.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

There have been a lot of my family members who have served in the military, some saw war some not. Thankfully none died in action.

I make all those things from scratch except for potato chips. I was actually going to make macaroni salad yesterday and never got around to it. I prefer potato salad but have macaroni and no potatoes.

my favorite sides are chips or french fries, love potato salad, but no onions and most people stuff it full of onions. mac and cheese is my MOST favorite of all... mothers homemade, not the kind in a box. none of my family died in a war except my dad's grandfather died at Shiloh during civil war.

We have a lot of military ties in our family, for generations.

I'm with you on potato salad. I don't like the vinegary kind.

I believe 'the new normal' and 'shelter in place' will be catchphrases. I haven't heard anyone use 'flattening the curve'.

Have a great week!!💖

I like your random. I forgot about Dylan's service to our country. Dangerous mission! I think the term I wish they would stop saying right now is we are all in this togetheg6. I cringe when I hear that.

I hope June is a kinder month Debby!

I like your goodbye to May and also that random. So true and so good.

I don't think I knew that about your son-in-law, but am grateful for his service. I hope you're staying well. I like your random thought and think it's something we're learning in this season of being apart.

You are right - life is precious.
I didn't know that Dylan served in the Marines - thank him for me.

Nice random thought.

WOW about Dylan's experience while in Iraq? I got goosebumps reading that. I try not to stay glued to the TV, but the way in which our Covid19 numbers are rising in the last 48 hours is sobering. I'll not quit wearing my mask anytime soon. Love your random thought!

I love potato salad but I have never made it. In my family, we all made what our specialty. We still do when we get together. Not sure when that will happen again. My sisters make the salads. They always ask my hubby to make the salsa and bring chips. Take care during the heat.

Terrific random questions today.
1. My Father in Law was a 30 year Major in the Army and fought during Pearl Harbor..fortunately he survived.
My Dad was conscripted to come to California and become a welder in the Shipyards during WWII. He helped build the big "War" ships.
2. I make most of these but my and my Hubby's very favorite is potato salad..not the vinegary kind.
3. I know this one isn't on the list but the word is BASICALLY..It seems to be thrown in to make what ever the person is talking about more informative. Also I MEAN...yup, that one bothers me.
4. The New Normal..guilty of using it too but I really don't want THE NEW NORMAL !!
5. May has been a roller coaster of emotions and endeavors.
6. God has given you something you can give back to the world in a way no one else can...Thanks to Ruth Hiebert for this thought on 5-14-20

Enjoyed reading your answers, Debby. Wow about Dylan entering Hussein's palace. That must have been surreal. Love your random thought! Happy last week of May to you!

I haven't heard "chirp," so I'm not sure what that means. I'm with you and not liking "jelly" or "totes."

My family is military from way back. My father retired as a Commander in the Navy, both my grandfathers were Colonels in the Army, and pretty much every generation before that has military in it.
