1. This week's Hodgepodge lands on Ash Wednesday which signals the beginning of Lent. Do you mark this season in some way? If so tell us more. Did you grow up 'celebrating' Lent? Is attending church part of your weekly routine? Are churches open for in-person worship where you live?
I didn't even know it was Ash Wednesday. I did know that Easter was going to be early this year. Not being Catholic I've never really done anything about Ash Wednesday.
No attending church is not part of my routine and I believe some churches are open but you have to remember that California still has many restrictions.
2. When is the last time you sat beside a 'real' fire? Do you have a fireplace in your home? Wood or gas logs? Favorite thing cooked over a fire?
We were just talking about the last time we used our fireplace. Can't even remember. It is a gas fireplace. I have sat by a gas fireplace in Adam and Gabby's backyard. I always enjoyed doing marshmallows over a fire. If it's a fire in our grill then I'm going with a steak!
3. Something that's currently got you fired up?
That would be my lung issues and the fact that I called my pulmonary doctor on Monday. I told the receptionist that I recently got out of the hospital and needed to talk to him. First day available is March 17th and he is not seeing patients in person, only on the phone. Well that just won't do.
Thankfully my primary doctor got me in yesterday for an office visit which went pretty good. I'm still not myself yet but we have a plan of action to take and a new medication to try.
4. February also happens to be National Cabbage Day. Who knew? Do you like cabbage? Is cabbage on your menu Wednesday? Of the following cabbage dishes which is your favorite-coleslaw (mayo or vinegar?), sauerkraut, cabbage rolls, cabbage soup, kielbasa and cabbage, grilled cabbage, bubble and squeak, kimchi, or haluski?
I had no idea is was National Cabbage Day. Yes I do like cabbage. It's in a soup I made which I will be eating for lunch today. I have to go with sauteed cabbage over brown rice.
That isn't listed but that is my very favorite. From the list I would then go with Sauerkraut. I grew up with pork, dumplings and sauerkraut for Sunday dinners.
5. Do you hang on to pennies? What do you do with them? Last thing you purchased for $1.00? Last thing you purchased for $5.00?
Yes we do hold on to pennies. We have a huge, like 3 ft tall beer bottle that we throw change into. Well honestly I would have to say nothing for $1.00 or $5.00 since I don't shop at all with Covid out there.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Valentine's candy from Mark. I know what you're probably thinking but trust me this candy will last a very long time. I don't eat sugar very often and I know that I can eat one piece a week and stay away from it the rest of the time.
Just a note to let you know that I will not be able to get caught up on all the posts I've missed while being out sick.

My father was a very strict catholic. We went to church every Sunday and every other holy day of obligation which included Ash Wednesday. I remember when I was a kid I was always so embarrassed to walk around with ashes on my forehead.
I think the last time I sat by a fire was before Wade passed away. We had bought a chiminea for our anniversary one year. He loved to sit out back and build fires.
last time by a fire was Christmas Bonfire at our church in 2001. no fires in Florida although a few have outdoor fires.
so glad you got in to see the doctor and have a PLAN., I only knew the word Lent growing up, because my best friend was Catholic and had dirt on her face, or so i thought back then. we save pennies and all change, I love cabbage in any form, in any form. now i am wondering about all these days and who comes up with them. I found it is Kindness day, now this is cabbage day and ash wed,we don't do days or holidays. 365 days a year are just days. coleslaw with mayo is the best, but i like the vinegr one to and kielbasa and sauekraut are on the menu for the coming week.
Hi Debby:
We have an electric fireplace, but we don't cook with it.
Unfortunately I can't eat cabbage.
Glad your doctor got you in yesterday and I hope your new medication
works for you and you get better!

The pulmonologist isn’t seeing patients in person??? That’s crazy! How can he listen to lung sounds? I’m glad your regular dr saw you and I hope you are feeling better and better!
Yum on the candy, Debby! Such a nice assortment! Glad you got into your primary doctor and hopefully this new plan of action will be effective! I am having a hard time grasping it is Ash Wednesday; not that I do much about it but just the beginning of Lent and Easter around the corner. Year is going by too fast once again. We do have in person church services for the majority of our churches here. We've been attending since August in person with no problems. They do socially distance. I like cabbage too. My mom used to make cabbage rolls. Cabbage leaves wrapped around ground meat that had rice in it. Cooked it in tomato soup. Very tasty!
betty
I understand docs not seeing patients for regular check ups and appointments right now but you would think a pulmonary visit in person would be a necessity! I'm so glad you were able to get an appointment with your regular doc at least.
I’m glad your doctor saw you. Praying for you this morning.
Your candies look yummy!
I am thrilled the doctor saw you and you have a new plan. It sounds like you feel good about it. You needed that.
I'm not a fan of this new tele-med either. If I want to see a doctor, I want to SEE them, not try to describe my symptoms over the phone. Your candy looks yummy, I haven't heard of the Fine & Dandy brand. I love English toffee.
That candy looks delicious
Ugh! So much fall out from Covid, and I am not much of a fan of a video appointment either. I am so glad you were able to see the doctor and have a plan. I hope you continue to improve and feel better every day.
Like everyone else..I'm so glad you were able to get in and see your doctor..somethings are best in person..Wow, that looks like yummy candy..good for you to be able to eat only one now and then..me??? once I start, I can't stop..so I'm better to not have any around.
We are regular church goers but haven't been inside for months. Still doing church on line..I do miss the fellowship though.
We don't really recognize Ash Wednesday and as a kid I always thought the ashes on the forehead was strange.
Sue
Thank goodness your primary was able to see you! That pulmonologist (seemingly) has no heart. I wasn't raised in the Roman Catholic church -- rather, Lutheran -- but Ash Wednesday and Lent was always observed. Same with the Methodist church we currently attend.
I'm a member of a United Methodist Church and we celebrate Ash Wednesday and Lent. As I've been visiting other hodge podgers I've been surprised how many people think that only Catholics celebrate Lent. Your candy looks delicious. Chocolate and peanut butter is my favorite combo!! I'm amazing that you can eat a piece a month and be happy. If I eat one piece . . .I can't stop. So about three or four years ago (for Lent) I gave up sweets and I actually felt so much better without all the sugar that I never started eating them again.
I’m so glad you’re starting to feel better. Fingers crossed! :)
It would normally have been the first day after Carnaval here in the Netherlands, but this year all those celebrations were cancelled.
Since Corona started, I have hardly used cash, although I will save up my small change on occasion. However, my piggy is very very hungry at the moment!
Hope you will feel better soon.
Wow that is a lot of chocolate! I am fasting candy and processed sweets for lent. I am not Catholic but I am celebrating lent this year through Bible journaling. I don't do the ash thing but I remember my grandmother on my dad's side with the ash and some kids I went to grade school with. I don't like tele appointments either. I hope you feel better soon!
I am so glad you at least were able to get some response and help from your primary dr. What a shame that these specialists don't give the time needed by their patients. So much for an emergency. Oh my, that candy assortment looks wonderful. It would take a lot of resolve for me to make them last very long.
I was locked up in this house with NO SWEETS....I have this thing, that if I don't buy and bring home I will not eat it. HOWEVER, it seems that every evening I crave something sweet and its not here. Drives me nuts. I have tried having it here, just for those spells but I tend to lean to them all through the day...NO WILL POWER! So with the snow melting a bit yesterday I ventured out...I HAVE SWEETS now. HAHA....bet those choc peanut butter melts are good. I got Walmart brand of Tagalongs (Girl Scout cookies), they are also choc and peanut butter....they are as good as GS and cost a lot less.

I didn't even know it was Ash Wednesday. I did know that Easter was going to be early this year. Not being Catholic I've never really done anything about Ash Wednesday. HAHA...my answer is the same as yours.
2. When is the last time you sat beside a 'real' fire? Do you have a fireplace in your home? Wood or gas logs? Favorite thing cooked over a fire?
maybe about two years ago at a bonfire. I have a fake fireplace in my home, but something is wrong with it. I was planning on someone looking at it but by the time I had it moved upstairs and realized it did not work I was thinking spring. Then that rodent said six more weeks and Mother Nature agreed by sending us a week of winter temps, ice and snow. I will however have it fixed come next winter.
3. Something that's currently got you fired up?
My daughter having to deal with government issues. I had to jump in and help her get the ball rolling.
I love raw cabbage. I love cabbage in cole slaw, I like boiled cabbage and roasted or grilled cabbage steaks. I however, do not like sauerkraut. NO...NO....NO....
5. Do you hang on to pennies? What do you do with them? Last thing you purchased for $1.00? Last thing you purchased for $5.00?
I tend to not spend them when my total requires that odd number like 3.61 or 6.31....things like that. But if its 3.01 then I will dig down in the wallet and pull that penny out. Nothing worse then someone having to count out 99 cents of change. I have a BIG pickle jar that I throw change in. Not just pennies though. I sometimes will put change in my pocket when I get it back, so at night, that goes in the jar. Once every now and again when said change gets heavy, I clean out the wallet and it all goes in there. Be interesting to see just how much is there now.
6. Insert your own random thought here. I wanted SNOW. Something that Nashville rarely see's since I was a teen or young adult. I wanted. I got a tad over 3 inches and I love it. HOWEVER, ready for roads to melt. Most have but my road is still covered. Temps at 41 today, sunshine....it will happen.
Well, I hope your "plan & new meds" helps you recover.
By the way, I too love pork & sauerkraut!!
Hi Debby,
I have been missing here on blog land. Two friends passed away last week. I am slowly feeling like getting back into the grove of the blog.
I hope you feel better soon.
I enjoy a good pork and sauerkraut meal. :-)
Hope you're good as new soon, take care. Yes, we have a jar full of pennies, some of them look older and dirtier than dirt! Another Methodist here, we do celebrate Lent but our church has been closed throughout this pandemic. And cabbage, love it in about any way it's cooked. Candy looks good, and I'm the same as you, it will last a long time.
I grew up in the Episcopal church, which "celebrates" Lent (although it's not a celebration, it's a contemplative penitential season before Easter). I don't really observe Lent any more but every few years I go to an Ash Wednesday service.
