CHICAGO TO CALIFORNIA ON ROUTE 66

Please head on over to become a destination!

I was born and raised in Chicago with loving parents. In 1972 I married the love of my life. But as you know life doesn't always turn out the way we plan it. My mother passed away when I was 31 years old and then 9 months later my husband left me. I played the role of a single parent for six years. It's exhausting! We actually lived right off of Route 66 in Western Springs, IL.

Then my husband (x) came back into my life and that is how I ended up in Southern California. In 1988 I packed up our two children and headed West. We lived in the San Diego/La Jolla area for 8 months before heading North. Not North as in Northern California but around two hours North of San Diego. I loved San Diego, it's a town with so many wonderful things to do and see. Then it was back to Route 66 for 17 years when we moved into our home in Fontana, CA. (when I was 8 years old my family made the trip to California driving the whole way on Route 66 from Chicago)

La Jolla Coves

We purchased a home in Fontana, CA the next year since my husbands work brought us into Los Angeles. 1989 was the peek of the housing market in California. We ended up being about 45 East of Los Angeles where new houses were somewhat affordable and many builders had to hold a lottery drawing because of demand. We were lucky enough to walk into a sales office on the day they opened a new street up for sale. We lived in that home for 17 years before moving to Riverside, CA which is about 25 miles South of our home in Fontana. We also got remarried in 1989 in Las Vegas on our original wedding date only 17 years later.

California Speedway Fontana, CA

We were lucky enough to sell our home at the peek however that meant that we bought our new home at the peek too. Our new home has a large kitchen, large family room, 3 bedrooms, two offices, living room, dining room and is on a hilltop, we love it. Our children just don't understand why we waited until they were all grown up and out of the house to buy the big house but let me tell you that we all enjoy it and it's a great place to gather. Actually our daughter and son-in-law moved in with us last March so having extra rooms is a plus. Of course we don't have room for company now but we had just about everyone out to visit with us the year before! We have no other family in California. (we did have my aunt & uncle here for many years until they passed away)

Home in Riverside

So here I am living in a new home (well it was new 4 years ago) that is on a hilltop with a gorgeous view. My husband now works only 9 miles from work and that is a huge blessing with California traffic. I am pretty much a homebody these days (severe asthma/COPD) so I actually don't have a lot to share with you about Riverside per say. We do have the Mission Inn which is a Historical Landmark and really fun to visit in the winter when the building is decorated with lights that go on forever. Our daughter actually got married in the chapel 8 years ago and it was the perfect dream wedding that we actually planned in a three week period of time. Her future husband was home on leave from the Marines and they had decided that after 9/11 they didn't want to wait until he was out of the service to tie the knot. We also have several Casinos not too far away which I like to go to.

Daytime view in winter w/snow in the mountains

Mission Inn Riverside, CA

I still seem to gravitate back to our stomping grounds in the Rancho Cucamonga area, especially because I bowl out that way on Tuesday mornings so I just stay in the area and run my errands. One thing about living where we do now and even where we lived for 17 years is the fact that you can be almost anywhere within a short period of time. We are only 3 1/2 hours from Las Vegas, 45 minutes away from the snow in the Winter, about 1 or 2 hours from the beach depending on which one you go to and the same with going into Los Angeles. We are only 40 minutes from Disneyland which we visited twice last year. For those of you with young children I want you to know that it's a lot of fun with your adult children too!

Living in the Inland Empire does have it's downfalls, especially during the winter months when we have Santa Ana winds. It took me years to get use to them coming from Chicago. Winds always meant a storm was coming, I was always waiting for the rain and tornadoes. There are times when these winds can be very damaging. Of course getting use the earthquakes is a whole other story! It is an incredible feeling to feel the earth move under you that's for sure!

Of course one of the best things about Southern California is the weather. I can't complain, although I have been know to do that. I never need more then a sweater and the heat is a dry one. Unless it gets into the upper 90's or over 100 degrees you really don't feel any humidity and that's a good thing. I pretty much wear capri pants and Birkenstock shoes 24/7/365. (of course a blouse too) If you read my blog you will see that I had to get a pair of closed toe shoes for an upcoming trip to Chicago at the end of October.

I know that many people say they would miss the weather changes but after living here for 22 years I can tell you that we do have changes. We even have trees whose leaves change color. Sure it's a little different when Christmas comes but if we want to be in the snow we can and if we don't we can sit in the hot tub! (and my husband is not outside in the freezing weather hanging Christmas lights) After 31 years of living in a suburb outside Chicago with the cold of Winter and the Summer storms I can truly say that I don't want to go back but I do love to visit.

Now if you want a post on the FOODS I miss from Chicago I could fill a whole page for you and that is why I am looking forward to my trip back in October and some great eats along Route 66!

Thank you for stopping over. If you are ever in town come on over for a cup of coffee, or a glass of wine and enjoy the view.

RANDOM DOZEN

Linda is waiting for you so head on over and join us!

1. Do you believe, somewhere deep inside, that blondes do indeed have more fun? That they are "dumber" than brunettes or redheads? Be honest!
No, I was blonde most of my life and I can't say I had more fun because of it. If I was dumb it wasn't because of my hair color.

2. Which animal would you most like to observe in its wild habitat?
A Giraffe because I love them. They are so graceful.

3. This week the U.N. announced that Dr. Mazlan Othman has been appointed the official "Alien Ambassador," should any extraterrestrials contact us. Have you, or has anyone you know, ever seen a UFO?
I believe my son thinks that he saw one once when he was younger and I am sure he would still say that now.

4. Name your favorite Hitchcock film.
Well you can't go wrong with Psycho but I think my favorite is The Birds!

5. Would you rather spend time at the library, the mall, a craft store or home?
Home for sure, then it would be mall, craft store and library.

6. Which Disney princess is your favorite? (Or Disney character, if you are a guy)
I like Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

7. What kind of art is your favorite?
I love paintings.

8. How do you feel about viral videos, that is, videos made by amateurs that end up on Youtube receiving thousands of hits?
I don't care one way or another. If you get famous well then good for you.

9. Where do you buy your jeans?
Since I am overweight I just buy pull-on denim pants. Heck I can buy them at Walmart for next to nothing. I wish I had an answer to this but that won't happen until I'm down at least 50 lbs.

10. Tell me about your first automobile accident.
It was back in the 70's. I was driving and this girl in front of me was pulling into her driveway only she didn't' signal and looked like she was turning left obviously making a big loop to pull in better. I hit her!

11. Have you ever been honest when you knew you would benefit more if you would be dishonest?
I would say that I am sure I have done that but it would have been years ago. I have always taught my children to accept a gift with kindness even if they already have one at home, rather then say "I have this" and hurt someones feelings.

12. If you were appointed "Ambassador to Aliens," what would you show and tell first about life on Earth? What would be the most difficult thing to explain?
I don't have a clue! I am sure that wearing make-up would be difficult to explain like why we paint our nails!

Maybe 20 but several of them are warn out and need to be tossed.

I know how but I do not believe I have the strength anymore.

EIGHT CUBED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Carol at The Gardner tagged me with eight questions. Head on over and meet Carol, she is a new follower of mine and I am sure you will enjoy her blog. Also check out the questions she had to answer from Candance. I am not going to tag anyone but if you want to play along I will put my questions from Carol at the bottom of the page. Thank you Carol for the tag and for becoming one of my new friends.

1. Is there any one thing in life you still long to do?
I would still love to make an imprint in the world and of course BE THIN!!!

2. What makes you sad?
The heart of the grieving parent.

3. When you think back over your life so far...what is the one perfect day that stands out in your mind?
I should be saying the birth of my children or my wedding but I am going to say the day that I became a born again Christian. Of course my husband taking me to Vegas to see Barry Manilow was a pretty good day :)

4. Who is your favorite person to be with?
I am going to plead the 5th on this one! (okay Carol, that's a hard one)

5. Do you keep or tell secrets?
I have matured enough that I can now keep a secret. I have learned my lesson. Do I tell secrets, yes but nothing that would come back to haunt me if it came out!

6. What kind of music do you listen to the most?
I listen to soundtracks from movies the most. I do like smooth jazz.

7. Eggs and bacon or French toast and waffles?
Can I choose eggs with French toast?

8. If you had one idea to share with the world what would it be?
Always speak the truth and have compassion in your heart for others.

ONE OF THOSE DAYS

I know we all have them, the day that just drives you a little mad. It doesn't take much for that to happen to me. The day starts out with my low tire light going on. The run flat tires on this Mini will trigger with temperature change. I have learned that I am able to reset it so I don't panic like I use to but I know that I have to go over and get the pressure checked. I am not good with change!

So traffic sucked on the way to bowling again but I wasn't late so that was a good thing. Bowling was fun, always is but I couldn't bowl worth a darn. I am maintaining a 113 average. That is not a good thing but as a team we did okay Tuesday against the team we played. Then I had a lunch to celebrate a team members birthday and that I have to say was a good thing :-)

Then I ran to the bank and needed to get gas. There is a car wash I like nearby which is touch-less which is all that I will use. (no brushes for me) Well wouldn't you know it, the screen never asked me so I had to go and park the car, go inside to get my car wash receipt. That made me mad. I told the woman that I like when it asks me if I want one. She said most customers complain that it asks them so they took that feature off. Thank you very much!!!!

I had decided to do a grocery run with coupons. We do almost all of our shopping at Costco. I will run out for maybe milk and soda but most things are bought on our Costco run. So when I gather up enough really good coupons I run over to our Ralph's grocery store to take advantage of sales with coupons. It takes time and I had a whole cart full.

There is one check out open for 15 or less items!! A woman was flagging me to go over to the self check out. I told her I have a full cart, I really wasn't interested. She said she would help me so I went over reluctantly. Sorry but the Queen does not want to ring up and bag her groceries. I'm just saying..........

She did help but was running from machine to machine to help people. So then I tell her I have coupons. Yes I had about 25 coupons, that was the reason I went, remember? So I am watching as she does them and I thought it didn't seem right. See Ralph's is our double coupon store. Well not anymore..........and I was angry. They only double up to a one dollar now so my 13 $1.00 coupons were only worth $13.00 not $26.00. So I politely said that I may as well shop at Wal-Mart since their prices are better! The problem there is that mine isn't really a Super store although they have added a better grocery section but they don't always have everything that I want.

This was me after my day:

I know that in the scheme of things this is nothing but since it's my post..... I'll cry if I want to! I claim to be a person who has patience but on Tuesday I failed on that claim.

So after I wrote this post my evening went better. I watched Glee & Parenthood which were both awesome. I had a glass of wine (which I don't have very often anymore) and eventually went to bed. My husband comes to bed soon after I did and he likes to take one of those Mid-nite pills to help him sleep. (it's actually very silly because he is one of those people who is out before his head hits the pillow) So he comes to bed with it in his hand, pulls the covers back and drops it!!!!! Guess who took it ~ SKYE! Well I blew my top big time. I panicked. I immediately went to my computer to look up whatever I could find out. (my husband said she will be fine and was asleep in a few seconds)

I couldn't find anything on the website so I headed over to a place where you could ask the vet. Of course after you ask the questions they want money to give you an answer so I left. Then I searched for Melatonin for dogs. They actually give it to dogs to calm them down, dogs who can't handle thunderstorms, fireworks, etc. I felt a little better after I read about it. I stayed up with Skye for awhile, she actually played with Charlie and didn't have any effects from it. Thank God.

I however had a horrible night of sleep, pulled some muscle in my neck from stress and really messed up my asthma. Yes it was one of those days..........................

P.S. There is a new post of ornaments over at Debby's Tree

I'VE BEEN TAGGED

Mary at Life in a Small Town tagged me with a meme so I am playing along. I am not going to tag you but if you want to play along the questions are at the bottom of the page. Head on over and visit with Mary and read her answers to the questions she was asked. Thank you Mary for thinking of me.

1. Did you play a sport in high school? If so, which one(s)?
No I did not play a sport but I was pretty good in gymnastics until I took one bad spill on my back.

2. If you watch Food Network, what is your favorite show and who is your favorite personality on the network?
I loved watching Jamie Oliver and Alton Brown but I haven't watched in a long time.

3. What is the job around the house that you dislike the most?
All the above. I don't enjoy any of them anymore but I guess that washing the floors would be the worst.

4. Name one person or defining moment in your life that made you who you are today.
This may sound weird but my husband leaving me made me the person I am today. Now this didn't happen overnight, it took years. I was very spoiled and when you get knocked down you will sometimes realize that you were not a very nice person. I grew a big heart filled with compassion for others who are hurting. (We have been back together for 21 years)

5. Who/what do you look toward for you inspiration?
I have found inspirations in many things. The Bible is by far the greatest inspiration. I have also found inspiration in people like Princess Diana.

6. Are you one of those women who insists on wearing makeup before you step foot out of the house?
No! however I am sure that there was a time when I was that way.

7. What is the one item of makeup that you never do without?
One doesn't work for me. Lipstick, eyeliner and mascara with a touch of blush works for me.

8. What is your favorite story in the Bible?
The birth of Jesus.

Thank you for stopping over, I love when you visit with me. Here are the questions:

1. Did you play a sport in high school? If so, which one(s)?
2. If you watch Food Network, what is your favorite show and who is your favorite personality on the network?
3. What is the job around the house that you dislike the most?

RANDOM DOZEN

CLICK ON THE DOZEN TO JOIN IN.

HEAD ON OVER AND SAY HELLO TO LINDA.

1. Have you, or has someone close to you, ever won an award for anything? (I just came from my dad's ceremony wherein he was given a medal of honor by the French government for service in France in WWII. Pictures to follow.)
I believe that my father-in-law received some awards in the service and also my son-in-law. My father also received several but I don't remember what they were for.

2. Who is the nearest relative to you who has served in the US Military?
Our son-in-law served in the Marines and he fought in Iraq. We are very proud of him.

3. Share something that stirs the patriotic spirit in you.
For some reason it's fireworks for me and of course the National Anthem.

4. Where are you in the birth order in your family? Do you think your "placement" made a difference in your personality?
I am the baby. I have an older brother and sister. Yes, I was spoiled rotten!

5. Name one trait you hope you carry that was evidenced in your parents or grandparents.
They were all very kind hearted people who would give you the shirt off their back.

6. If female, do you prefer wearing a skirt or pants? If male, shirt and tie or polo?
Pants always!

7. Approximately how many times do you wake during the night? What do you do to go back to sleep?
I usually will wake up and go potty. If I can't sleep I will go lay on the couch and watch a movie that I love. One that I know by heart and I fall asleep to it. There is also a small pill called Mid-Night that works really well with NO side effects.

8. Share a favorite movie quote.
Sometimes I just draw a blank when I'm working on this. I do know that in the movie "Ever After" when Drew Barrymore gets to the ball she stands there and says "Just Breathe." That is how I named my blog because with my asthma some days I want to JUST BREATHE.

9. What is your favorite Fall candle scent?
Mandarin Orange

10. What is one Fall activity you're looking forward to?
Going to Oak Glenn to get apples.

11. Tell us about a pleasant surprise that happened to you recently.
Well it hasn't actually happened just yet but we have a trip planned to Chicago and we found out the my mother-in-law will actually be there at the same time so we will also get to see her. (she lives in Texas)

12. What was it like when you first met your in-laws-to-be?
I was extremely insecure at the time so I know I was nervous. My mother-in-law never lived in the same state with us so it's been pretty easy. My father-in-law was a very hard man, it way always his way or the highway.

(You all know how much I love to answer questions)

1. What is your favorite all time movie?
It's a Wonderful Life

2. How often do you go over the speed limit?
I always drive over the posted limit but I set my cruise control, otherwise I would be flying with everyone else at 80!!

Snakes & spider for sure but I have found that I have a hard time watching things on TV or in movies with a lot of blood.

4. What is your favorite snack?
I love eating Frosted Mini Wheat's as a snack. If it's chocolate it is Reese's BIG Peanut butter cups.

5. Would you rather be a dog named Killer or a cat named Fluffy?
So I can't be a dog named Fluffy? Okay I'm going to be the dog.

OOPS! & YOU CAN'T MAKE ME

I was reading a blog the other day that reminded me of these. I may have talked about these two little Pocket Dragons in another post but I'm too lazy to go check it out. Anyway these are new pictures with captions because I have been playing on photobucket recently. See I get all caught up on my blog reader and rather then actually do something around the house I still sit here and play!

I bought these little figurines on QVC years ago. These are my children when they were growing up and I know that some of it is still true today. Our son had to touch every button or whatever intrigued him. Put him in the front seat of the car and every button had to be touched and played with. Of course the oops would often follow! So as you may have guessed by now the other is our daughter and even though she isn't quite as stubborn as she was this still holds true on many occasions, she just has a sweeter way of expressing it! Believe me when I tell that it didn't matter who tried to reason with her she was not going to give in.
