Received this in an email and thought it was fitting for my upcoming birthday!
One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events.
The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general..
The Grandmother replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before:
' television
' penicillin
' polio shots
' frozen foods
' Xerox
' contact lenses
' Frisbees and
' the pill
There were no:
' credit cards
' laser beams or
' ball-point pens
Man had not invented:
' pantyhose
' air conditioners
' dishwashers
' clothes dryers
' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and
' man hadn't yet walked on the moon
Your Grandfather and I got married first, .. ... ... and then lived together..
Every family had a father and a mother.
Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir".
And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir."
We were before gay-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.
Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.
We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.
Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege...
We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.
Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.
Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started.
Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums.
We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.
We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.
And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.
If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk
The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam....
Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.
We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.
Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.
And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.
You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, . .. . but who could afford one?
Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.
In my day:
' "grass" was mowed,
' "coke" was a cold drink,
' "pot" was something your mother cooked in and
' "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.
' "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,
' " chip" meant a piece of wood,
' "hardware" was found in a hardware store and
' "software" wasn't even a word.
And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.
No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap. and how old do you think I am?
I bet you have this old lady in mind....you are in for a shock!
Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.
Are you ready ?????
This woman would be only 59 years old!
That's me until Monday!
New post at Debby's Tree today!

Have a great weekend! This rings true for me as well. Funny how the times have changed. Enjoy your upcoming birthday.
Sounds like a plan. Have a great weekend. Blessings.
Shocked... Have a great birthday!
Isn't that the truth! My grandkids (7 and 9) are shocked at some of the things that we didn't have when we were growing up that they take for granted.
Have a wonderful last 50-y.o. weekend!
I must go out today to buy you a Birthday Gift! It will be a little late, but im excited to go look for you.
I always say when it comes to electronics,"can we get anymore advanced in all these cell phones, computers and such?" I just turned "38" and I could name a ton of things like you that has really changed.
Its crazy. My daughter ask me at the goodwill what a record was. she had no idea. and just the other day she asked what the noise was from a landline phone. It was the sound of course as we know, the busy signal.
I wonder how much things will change when I am 60.
It's too bad we can't fast backward to that time!
A fun post sweet Debhy. Happy Early birthday wises to my friend. Post like this are a good reminder of all of the things that have happened. My husbands Grandmother lived to be 99 years old and she was sharp as a tack and remembered in grate detail all of the changes she had witnessed.Sending big hugs and sincere wishes for a weekend filled with joy, Katherine
loved that! I do have to admit I was thinking of my grandma and she is 80 something.. she and my grandpa built their own house!
have a great weekend!!
enjoy your last weekend in your 50s Debbie! I can sure relate with this that you shared; so much has changed in just short years of our lives! I know your next decade will be a great one!
betty
crazy isn't it!!
happy happy early birthday!!!
Wow!! How times have changed.
I am thankful a few of these have been invented, like pantyhose, air conditioners and clothes dryers.
I do believe, in some ways, life was much simpler back then.
Happy Birthday!
Whoa..and I'll be 62! I AM old! Oh...and happy birthday on Monday!!!!
What the heck? Really? It's just so weird how much things have changed in such a short amount of time!
Girl, I want to join' in the fun and wish you a very happy birthday. I can so identify will the very hilarious list of yours. I just celebrated #59 a couple weeks ago.
God bless ya and have a fabulous weekend!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEBBY! :O)
Happy Birthday sweet Debby!
Hugs,
Trisha
There are good tings and bad things about every era, I suppose.
A very happy birthday to you!
Have a really great weekend!
Time's certainly have changed. I had to look up the McD's one.
Amazing how much things have changed in just over 50 years, isn't it?
I'm like you, I would sort of like to go back, armed with today's knowledge :)
Enjoy your weekend, and your upcoming birthday.
times have certainly changed! happy birthday a little early.
Wow! It almost seems crazy! Have a great weekend!
Oh I loved that!!!!
Happy Birthday! I hope you get totally spoiled!
Love this Debby and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I smiled while reading that because my kids generation won't even get some of the references like "tapes" and "CDs" now it's all DVR movies, Ipods... etc... The world is changing at such a fast pace. Makes me want to go hang with my Nan...
Hugs-
L
Love this, sounds better then the days now...Happy Birthday!
I hope you have a wonderful birthday! Mailed you a card & hope you get it in time. xoxo
hehe I love this! Have fun with the kids this weekend and enjoy your pre b-day weekend.
I was going to say that a lot of those things were just a decade before my time, so not very old at all. Hope you had a great birthday!
