WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

Volume 314
Thank you Joyce :)

1. Growing up, were you close to your grandparents? Tell us one or two specific things you remember about them.

Yes I was close with both sets of grandparents. My father's parents built a summer home in Union Pier, MI and I remember enjoying it a lot. We would walk to the beach and stop at the bowling alley for an ice cream cone.
Update: Just added this photo!

My mother's parents ended up moving to Florida but they would come and spend the summer in our fixed up basement. It was fun having them around and my grandmother was a great cook and made the best chocolate chip cookies in the world!

2. What's an item you were attached to as a child? What happened to it?

I honestly can't remember anything specific.

3. When you look out your window, do you see the forest or the trees (literally and figuratively)? Explain.

Literally I see the mountains....

Figuratively I can't see the forest for the trees because I overthink everything!

4. Do you like sour candies? Which of the 'sour' foods listed below would you say is your favorite

grapefruit, Greek yogurt, tart cherries, lemons, limes, sauerkraut, buttermilk, or kumquats

I don't care for buttermilk and I'm not sure I've ever had a kumquat. I do like all the others that are listed. When it comes to sour candies you can give me sour patch kids please.

Have you ever eaten a kumquat? No

What's your favorite dish containing one of the sour foods on the list?

I will go with pork, dumplings and sauerkraut, a traditional Bohemian dinner.

5. July 1st marked the mid point of 2017. In fifteen words or less, tell us how it's going so far.

Tough! Knee pain, missing the kids and 47 days helping my dad  in Florida.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I hope to write a new post one of these days. I've been feeling down and the knee pain is now constant 24/7 so I'm having trouble sleeping and being comfortable. I am so thankful for Wednesday Hodgepodge, it keeps me going!

I can answer two questions with one answer, I was very close to my grandmothers, and the one I loved most was here in FL and had kumquat trees, lemon and orange, mango and cherries in her yard. I love all of the sour things listed. sorry to hear the knee pain is so bad, hope you get your new knee soon and have no more days this year in FL

No on sour, but I do love recipes cooked with buttermilk. I sure hope you get your knee pain resolved soon!

Debby, so sorry to hear about your knee pain and how it knocks you off your routine. How wonderful to have had so many good times with your grandparents. Hope things settle down in the pain department real soon. You have a lovely view!

Let's see - I am glad you remember your grandparents - hope mine remember me.
Yikes I do not like sour like you do!
Never had a kumquat either.
How nice to see mountains from your home.
And I know it has been a tough year - 47 days with your dad - but you will never feel regret.

I hope you find some relief, soon, Debby. Constant pain can really mess up a person's life...been there, done that.
Hugs and prayers,
Kathy (Reflections)

What a fantastic view you have! I love mountains. Now I'm glad you are hanging in there on Wednesdays because I enjoy our visits. But I do hope you get feeling better soon.

I'm glad you're still participating and am sorry about yoru knee. I hope you get some relief soon. I love a mountain view almost as much as a lake view. We are surrounded by mountains here too, but our house doesn't have a mountain view. We enjoy it while boating though! Take care.

I was only close to one set of grandparents. My dads father died when I was really young and his mother didn't speak english.
Sorry you have to go through all the knee pain. Hope you have relief soon

Even though I'm Southern, buttermilk is so gross!

So sorry the pain is going so strong. I've never acquired a taste for saur-kraut. My parents love it and I hated when Mother made it for dinner. Maybe I should try it as an adult and see how it is. It's supposed to be good for you. Buttermilk is good when used to make biscuits. :)

It's good to 'see' you back, Debby! ... but I'm so sorry you're experiencing that level of pain. (*Prayers*)

The only time I buy buttermilk is during the holidays for my banana nut bread (makes it so moist!) ... then I feel bad dumping the rest down the drain!

I loved the picture you posted of your grandparents! Wonderful with the memories you have of them. Only my mom's mom was living by the time we were all born and she spoke Polish so we had a language barrier. I have to ask son what he remembers about his grandparents; he was 17 when my mom died and 22 when hubby's parents passed. We had a kumquat tree in our backyard growing up. It can be sweet when wipe. I hope you can get some relief soon about your knee. Been going on way too long!

So sorry about the knee pain. Nothing can wear on you like chronic pain. I'm having some difficulty with one of mine that is affecting my level of activity, but it is behind the knee. Crazy! Hoping you can get some relief soon. Loved the picture of you with your grandparents. Such memories are precious.

I am so sorry about the constant pain, Debby. I am praying for it to go away soon and for you to be able to get the rest that you need.

I am glad that you were able to spend so much time with your daddy and I pray that he continues to get better with each passing day.

What an awesome view you have! I have completely, totally jealous!

Have a blessed weekend. :)

Hi Debby,

I loved your answers. I guess the grandparents I was closest to was my mom's mom & step-father. We rarely saw my dad's parents. Although I wish we could have seen them more.

You have a beautiful view. When I look out our window all I see is Ga. red dirt. We have very little grass. We do have a lot of trees, though.

I am with you on buttermilk...yuk
However, I do like kumquats.

I have arthritis in my back, on Wednesday I will be getting my first back cortisone shot. I also think I have it in my knees. Sounds like you are having a rough year <3

Eugh, sour sweets! Never liked them, they made my face scrunch up (even today I will spit them out if possible). I do however like sauerkraut, but mixed together with potato mash. I don't mind buttermilk, but I rather drink milk. Greek yoghurt is fine and the rest I am not too fond of/have never tasted.

I hope you get your operation real soon now. I can so sympathise with you on the 24/7 pain. No way to get comfy, no way to get rid of the pain and you just get grumpier and grumpier!

I was very close to my maternal grandparents. We lived with them for a while after my parents divorced and then moved into a house within walking distance, so I knew their home as well as my own. I miss them.
