PHYSICAL THERAPY BLUES

If you follow me on Facebook you might have seen my post about my physical therapy. If you remember the surgeon wanted me to start out with physical therapy before he operated. He said that sometimes it helps people.

It didn't help my knee but I know it was beneficial to my recovery after surgery. I ended up going for 12 weeks before my surgery because it took so long to get things sorted out.

So now I have completed 5 weeks of physical therapy since the surgery. I have a break now because of our trip to Montana and then Vegas. So when I get home I have 2 sessions left. I hate going!

Before surgery and now I have muscle aches and pains for a few days following therapy. My hips hurt, my thighs hurt and my calves hurt. Then when it starts to feel better it is time for another session.

I had a follow up with my doctor on Tuesday. Everything is looking great. The only issue he sees is what they call the extension muscle at the back of the knee. When you are laying on the table and you point your foot straight up that muscle should be hitting the table. Mine isn't!

We work on that all the time at PT and by the end of the session it is down. The next time I go in and we start therapy it is up again. So the doctor has ordered six more weeks of PT with aggressive work on that muscle. Plus he wants me to go three times a week. I've only been going two days a week.

Needless to say I cried on the way home. I am so done! I only have so much energy each day because of my severe COPD and my Arterial Fibrillation. When I get home I am exhausted and I've ended up not getting things done around the house which I should be doing. On top of that I haven't been going to the show!!!!!

So I told them I will come in but I only want them to work on that muscle because I'm tired of doing all the other machines. So we did that on Thursday and it was pretty difficult. Actually we did things that we never did before and it really pulled at the muscle, however the next day it was fine, no muscle pain.

so sorry you have more to go through, do they have a therapy pool? or do you have access to a pool? I had the same thing with my right leg, and the excercises I do in the pool have made the back of the leg lay flat and they don't hurt while doing them or after. it did take a few months. I could not afford the 50 dollar per visits for therapy so got them to show me the pool exercise and have been doing them for 2 years in Nov... if I stop, it goes right back like it was. and I think yours will to. they know that and they want the money. my DIL worked in the office of therapist and it was her job to extend the therapy as long as they could. I take care of mine by daily excercises at home and in pool. I think you can to

Oh bless you! Are there exercises you are doing at home that can speed up the process with the muscle? I am sure you must be so tired of this ordeal, but look how far you have come!!! Hang in there!

Just keep plugging away. It will be worth it in the end when you make a complete full recovery. Have a fun trip!

You have very aggressive doctor - and he orders a lot my insurance wouldn't pay. Mine didn't touch the back either - but it does now - it will come. I am just saying if it is that bad....

I'm so sorry to hear P.T.'s been an ordeal!
But(!) I'd venture to say, Sandra's take on things sounds spot-on. When I had frozen shoulder, they kept trying to extend; even when my insurance stopped paying. I finally had to get stern and inform them no, I wasn't coming back.

PT is not for sissies for sure! I well remember mine from my shoulder surgery a few years back. I thought I never would get through. I do hope you will be "good as new" at the end. Have a good first week of Oct.

PT is not very fun - but it does pay off, which you know! I hope the extra weeks pass quickly for it, and you start feeling much better. At least you're on the other side of the surgery!

I am facing a knee surgery and I am NOT thrilled... I am so sorry you are having a tough time! (and headed to Vegas... *sigh*, my west coast loving heart is wanting to go and help any way I can today. I know you posted BEFORE last night's tragedy. I hope that your trip isn't affected- and it can be a happy trip for you!)
